Creating a single column frame, using Format, Update Object Default, and then using Tools/Save Default Settings, putting a tick by Object Styles in the dialogue box, and clicking Save seems to work OK here.

As Alfred says, I would have thought that resetting would also do the trick.

To the best of my knowledge that ensured a clean re-install of PPx9. Since text boxes still open with 2 columns, the problem remains after the reinstall. I'm happy with x6 so I'm not going to worry about the x9 version any longer.

Well, that was a bummer. I did Save Default Settings after changing the text frame object to one column but it didn't take. I uninstalled the program (after resetting it failed to fix the issue) and the 2-column text frame is still the default. I said the hell with it and reinstalled PPx6 which is working just fine.

Thanks anyway Geoff.
