One very interesting thing I remember from one of the results programmes of the 1979 election, the general election when Labour lost power and Mrs Thatcher became Prime Minister, was that the Labour Home Secretary was one of the guests in the studio.

The car bringing Mr Callaghan from Buckingham Palace after his resignation was shown and the television man asked the Home Secretary whether that meant he was no longer Home Secretary. The Home Secretary replied no, that it would all be sorted out in the next few days, but he was still Home Secretary at the present time.

I think it was the 1979 election when in the night television crews were in the street outside Mrs Thatcher's residence and the BBC presenter said they were going to take us to outside Mrs Thatcher's residence and on came the picture, showing Anna Ford, a then ITN news reporter, and the BBC man said "Oh, I don't think we should be seeing her."

Having said that, I don’t actually remember much detail from old election broadcasts. I do, however, remember the flavour of them, as so neatly encapsulated in a Monty Python sketch:

Interviewee: Can I just say this is the first time I’ve been on television?

Interviewer: I’m sorry, there isn’t time.
