54 years ago I was just 20 years old with my whole life in front of me, well, whole life minus 20 years. I had left school some 5 years previously and passed my driving test 2 years later. I bought my first pair of flared trousers about that time and thought they would be in fashion for ever - how very wrong I was!

The internet was not even a word back then, so if you missed the football results on the radio you had to wait for the newspapers the following day to see how your team did. The only match that was televised live was the FA cup final, and that was covered by the only two channels that were available, so if you didn't like football - hard luck, go and read a book I guess. These days practically every top flight game is on the TV live, even if it means games being played on Sundays, Mondays and at very odd times indeed. On the flip side test cricket is no longer the preserve of the BBC, so if you wanted to watch it you have to subscribe to Sky TV at extra costs.
Yes we have passed a lot of water since Clodagh adorned the stage at Eurovision, but is it better now, or then - you decide.

The thread

https://punster.me/serif/viewtopic.php?id=901

has got me thinking.

It is interesting that all three posters thus far in that thread remember that song.

It was fifty-four years ago.

The year of paisley patterns on shirts, small motifs of flowers and the like on men's shirts in mainstream outlets - a style that did not last - back to dreary plain white and plain blue and sometimes thin stripes as the only concession to anything with style.

Oh and the flared trousers.

Around that time I sent for a brochure of made-to-measure shirts by mail order and it was all dreary fabrics for men - lots of colourful striped fabrics for women. I wonder what would have been the reaction if I had enquired if I could have a man's shirt in one of those colourful fabrics.

William
