I don't know, but surely a file name has to have SOME extension? How would the the browser know it was Hyper Text Markup Language?
The clean installation failed. After 3 days of continuous ChatGPT leading me into nooks and corners of Windows I would never have believed, we solved it, and just in case anyone else has this problem the solution was -
I had wished to view HEIC format image files from my iPhone in IrfanView, and installed the CopyTransHEICWindows codec. IrfanView worked fine, but WebPlus stopped working with that error message. I have had to de-install CopyTrans and abandon IrfanView for editing HEIC files. There are other viewers available.

Thanks for the help, appreciated - I think i tried that. The error log seems to be saying it can't find SerifIMG.dll, which is apparently a common Serif graphic display dll used in all its products. The file does appear to be on the PC.
Disaster - WebPlus won't open!
I last used it perhaps a month ago and everything was fine. This morning, on opening, an error message that it couldn't open. As far as I am aware I have done nothing odd with the PC in the interval. The beginning of the error text looks like the image - there doesn't seem to be any way of obtaining the whole text - it won't copy and paste.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Yes, it my only computer. I think you'l find a lot of people are on W7 still.
I'm on Norton, and never open dodgy emails no matter how convincing. Actually ChatGPT is very good at analysing email headers.

That is about the size of my site - so that's a good comparison. I generally don't embed graphics. So it seems my problem is Windows 7.
OK - I realise I'm now using an 8? year old unsupported programme, but I have been a user for 10 years. X8 Win7 64bit.
It is incredibly slow - I mean REALLY slow. I just put up with it, I assume it is because it is so old?
Is this the same for everyone else? Or could I do something about it?

Ah - now this gets interesting - can you explain embedding images vs not please. Generally I do not, I presumed this saved space on the server? Perhaps not?

The page doesn't have any links - it's just standalone simple text. I can update the single link to it.
But doesn't the server maintain all sorts of indices and the Site Map, and mine says 'Updating Manifest' (whatever that is) after I have FTP'd the page?

Well I suppose I could reduce the page to nothing but its name - no text - no images - no hyperlinks - nothing, and Quicksave that.
I was hoping someone would say that it's not that difficult to delete it on the server?
I wish to delete a page. I see this is catered for under 'Pages'. But this presumably just deletes the page from the WP file on your local computer. How do you delete it on the remote ISP server? This doesn't appear to be covered by the WP help pages.
If the answer is 'just republish the site' I have a problem - because I have moved some pictures on my PC, so I can't do that - I only ever 'Quick Publish' the single page I am working on. And in any case it is quite a large site.
I could go into the ISP server and delete the page there - but what about the Site Map and 'Manifest'?
HA! As always simple when you know how. Many thanks to both of you for having the patience to sort this out for me. I still think it's confusing to have a box labelled 'Description' on the first set-up page with 'Title', and I'm not clear what it means. And I would still like to edit the HTML directly!

You might be wondering why I want to do this - I don't like the AI generated summaries that Google puts on my search results - I hoped that by having a 'Description' tag I could improve them.

OK - I have constructed a 2 page website 'Test Site.wpp' containing an 'Index Page' and a 'Blank Page'
In the blank page 'Page Properties' pop up I filled in the 'Description' box, and pressed 'OK'
I would have expected this to put a <meta> description tag into the header HTML
Looking at 'View Page HTML' there is nothing there other than the default HTML.
So I believe I am right that there is a bug.
To explain why I get a non-editable <meta> tag in my main website is a little involved. I wished to add several <meta> tags to my page headers automatically, so I used 'Site Properties' 'Google Analytics' HTML window to not only add the Analytics HTML but tags such as page width, no snippets AND description, assuming I would be able to edit it afterwards. That's why it appears.
HMM- you are right, the results are curious - I need more time to think. I don't get a <meta> Description tag at all.

Err - do you mean my whole web site xenophon.wpp? It's 244Mb? You can open the page www.xenophon.org.uk/blankpage.html, and then all browsers have a facility to look at the HTML?

Because as far as I am aware there is no way of accessing the ’Description’ tag of a web page, it is used by indexer bots.
Thanks for this - I had not explored 'HTML Fragments' before. You can certainly insert a <meta> Description tag into the header, but unfortunately it comes above the default non-editable one, and I presume that it is the last tag that is acted upon? The default tag comes immediately above /head, so there is no editable space under it.
Alas - there appears to be a bug in WebPlus (which can now never be corrected) such that anything entered into the 'Page Properties' 'Description' box doesn't actually appear in the HTML <meta> tag.
Phew! Thanks. That's pretty clunky. It seems to work it publishes OK, except you apparently can no longer see the page in 'Page View', which is where I would want to continue editing it. I'm just trying to add a <meta> 'Description' tag. It seems it is irrevocably classified as an 'HTML Page' rather than a normal page, even though it's HTML is identical to the normal page.
I wish to directly edit the HTML of a page. There is a facility to edit SOME of the HTML - those bits deemed 'editable'. I want to edit the other bits.
There is also the facility to add 'HTML Pages', where all the HTML is editable, so it is possible.
Is there any way I can do it, other than on my ISP's server, which I am reluctant to do.
Thanks - that is not quite what I am saying. If you fill in the Webplus Page Properties ‘Description’ box and then publish the page, I don’t think the text you filled appears anywhere in the html. Consequently it is not available to Google Search. Try it and see.
I am dissatisfied with the heading Google Search has given one of my pages. It seems this is generated automatically from the page contents by a complex algorithm. It consists of a 'Title' and a 'Snippet', you can turn off snippet creation with <meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">.
The 'Title' box in Webplus Page Properties sure enough inserts html <title>Your title</title> into the header.
I was hoping that the 'Description' box in Webplus Page Properties would insert the html <meta name="description" content="Your page description"> into the header. Instead it apparently does nothing?
Am I missing something (no pun intended)?
So - for the avoidance of doubt (as M'learned Friends say), this problem was left unresolved, but not by me!
