Re: Post your videos here

I was intending to do a bit of filming around our area in the UK during the snow before we set of to Spain for a while, unfortunately one of my best friends who was my sponsor for my motor racing career and ran the local brewery died a couple of weeks back and the funeral is on the 19th. We thought that we could get away after Christmas as we booked a flight on the 31st, but a death in the family has put a stop to it. Unfortunately my brothers wife died at the weekend after a brave fight against the big C and the funeral won't be until the new year.
It brings things back into reality when this happens, just as you are thinking that life is going fine. The picture below was taken by my wife of Bob Dockerty the brewery owner, and is going on the front of the order of service as it showed him just as he was. RIP Bob.

Gordon - Sorry to hear about your friend and sister in law but sadly we are now at an age where funerals become more frequent.

Christmas challenge for film and video makers

Do you remember the first movie you made years ago? Full of errors you wouldn't make now!  Can you grab it and post for old times sake?  Mine was in Easter 1967 when I went on a "safari" around South London parks "In search of Squirrels" https://vimeo.com/781392655

We don't have squirrels here in NZ.  They didn't get here naturally and early European settlers didn't bring any.  Unfortunately they brought plenty of other pests which have been very harmful to our native wildlife.

Re: Post your videos here

I have now watched the troublesome video Eric without a hitch. Very nicely done. Your voice-over was a bit quicker than it is nowadays, interesting how voices change over the years. Apart from the ability to watch homemade shows in your living room without having to blackout the room, video is so much more realistic IMO, what with being able to hear the sound of people clapping and talking etc.

Your brother is not the only person not wanting to dally in computers Eric. We have a comedian called Paul Merton, most famous for his contribution in "Have I got news for you", a satirical "quiz" on the BBC. He quite often mentions that he has no computer, smartphone or anything, when questioned how he manages without such things, he replies, exactly how I managed before these things were invented , It takes all sorts I guess...

Re: Post your videos here

Problem is the environment around is changing with technology.  For example cheques have disappeared here.  They're no longer accepted by banks so how are people who don't use internet or phone banking able to pay?  It's especially a problem if you aren't very mobile, or have deteriorating eyesight, dementia etc.

Re: Post your videos here

We can still use cheques here in the UK Eric and the only time I write one is if the plumber needs to call. One cheque book would last quite a few years these days. I seem to remember that the government stated a few years back that they wanted to do away with them, but for whatever reason did not do so.

Do you not have credit cards or debit cards in New Zealand, that's how we normally pay for things?

I do take your point though, society is turning more and more towards technology and people like myself are slowly being left behind. Even the NHS are using smartphone apps. I don't understand it.

The main problem that I have is that I haven't got an 8mm projector anymore, also the 16mm ones that I made at school were left there when I finished in 1962. The majority of my 8mm films were made at motor racing events with a non focusing clockwork camera that I bought in a junk shop for 10 bob. My later films were mainly made in Spain with a S8 sound cine camera and edited onto 400ft reels that I have been intending to put on Digi for ages.

Yes, I very rarely use cash nowadays.  EFTPOS is accepted in most places.  I still swipe and put in my PIN though.  I'm not keen on PayWave or waving a phone or watch etc.

Your beginning efforts Eric (Squirrels) were good .. far steadier than mine.  I would say your approach was more directed at a general audience whereas even my earliest efforts were more "home movies".  We put ourselves in the movies.  But clearly the camera work was shaky and frenetic.  I wish we had settled down and made cleaner, clearer shots but it does show my friend Bill and myself, age 18 on a trip after being liberated from High School.  I remember we did a film and slide show for our parents when we got back.  The whole thing was more than 30 min.

So here's about 2 minutes of that film project of 1962.  The digital transfer is poor.   The titles and music were added circa 2006 ??  https://youtu.be/Bsw2zbRGegs

Re: Post your videos here

Thanks Paul.  Did we see you three times - in a suit then orange then blue shirt?  If so you haven't changed much!

Yes. That's me --- as I was in my youth ... ahhhhhh .. the memory of being limber and full of energy.

I'll get some other examples of old film in a few days.

No snow here in sunny Southern California Eric   .. temps 75 or so Fahrenheit .. Lots of Christmas lights up and shining where I live but nothing like Franklin Road in Auckland ..

Here's a video from 2013 when we cruised to New Zealand.  It features our friend Roscoe who lives on Franklin road in or near Ponsonby.  Within the first minute we mention the famous Christmas lights on Franklin road.

Meet up with Roscoe -- 6 min.

Thanks Paul.  2013, a lot has happened in the world since then.  Glad you enjoyed your visit.

My village has lots of lights at Christmas.  I didn't video any this year but did last year "After Dark"  https://vimeo.com/660068834

Re: Post your videos here

As we will be in the UK for a while we went for a walk down the back of our house yesterday as the floods have receded. As usual I had my old Panasonic 990 in my pocket to capture a little part of our surroundings.

Eric and Gordon .. nice, peaceful videos.  Perfect for this time of year.  I enjoyed stepping back to that pace of life one use to enjoy before cell phones, Internets and Covid concerns.

May it be a Healthy and Happy New Year for you and yours.

Paul

Yes it's certainly "different"!  but I have lived here for over 70 years and we have always been used to floods. The house we now live in can get cut off as the road gets flooded in both directions as we are between two rivers that converge behind us. In 1968 we had the biggest flood after torrential rain for weeks that flooded the high street in the nearest Town downstream causing serious damage. A new flood barrier was installed in 1970 to stop it happening and now when they shut the gates the water rises within a few hours. However it soon disappears when they open them. This was a few weeks back and we could get through. In 1968 we had 0ver 6ft of water in this same spot!

Re: Post your videos here

1968 - I remember that.  We had flooding in South London.  My brother and I and other cycling friends were in Essex for an event but I then had to drive them back to Beckenham.  We lived SE24 and to get home from Beckenham all the roads on our route dipped under one of the Southern Rail train routes bridges.  Each dip was full of water.  My Morris 1000 Traveller got soaked and the bodywork was never the same afterwards!

Re: Post your videos here

Hello !! is there anyone still alive out there ?  I know that I have been to a couple of funerals in the last few weeks but hopefully some of us are still alive ?  I have also got to go to 2 more funerals in the next couple of weeks so that's 4, perhaps I could make a feature film especially if I get an invite to a wedding. Hmm I wonder what I could call it ?

Re: Post your videos here

Yes I'm still alive and currently working on a frustrating video.

But we are in the middle of the heaviest rain period in Auckland's recorded history.  Friday was horrendous and more coming.

Re: Post your videos here

Eric, we have been getting pictures on our news bulletins over here and Auckland looks horrendous, with pictures of people up to their waist in water. I did think of you as I was watching the pictures. Keep safe over there.
