The latest three images you’ve posted here are devoid of any context! The first of the three is clearly an image in portrait format of a woman painting a landscape in portrait format. The second one is just as clearly an image in landscape format of a woman painting a portrait in portrait format. What was your prompt for the third one?

Because my previous experience of pasting emoji into this forum as that it doesn't work.

Pasting (Unicode?) emojis doesn’t work, but shortcuts such as

:/

and BBCode such as

work fine.

Interviewer: What drew you to Affinity software for this kind of work?
Tobias: Speed and freedom. I used to feel boxed in by subscription models and bloated interfaces. Affinity gives me the tools without the noise. I can sketch, layout, and export without ever leaving the zone. Plus, the precision is perfect for when I do want to break the rules intentionally.

You’re doing it again, William! Please use the ‘Quote’ button on the toolbar above the message composition area:

The art exhibition will take place in the Swiss Alps, and will travel and accommodation be covered? Good job William, I would definitely like to attend

The post had a smiley after "attend.".

Why not include a smiley here? Just type a colon followed by a closing parenthesis. smile

If you prefer the smiley from the old Serif forums, click on the ‘Serif smilies’ link on the navigation bar at the top of this page to access the BBCode for it. https://punster.me/images/smile.gif

About this forum I agree with previous posts. I think that a Share your Work channel here would also be nice to see each others work like on the 'old' forum.

Ali wrote:

Nice maybe, but this would exponentially increase the amount of storage required and would incur extra costs for Alfred, so I think it might not be possible. If the forum remains mainly text-based, it'll remain relatively cheap to run.

Thanks for your concern, Ali, but ‘Share your Work’ uploads are typically images. The limit for anonymous uploads to postimage is a generous 32MB and 10K by 10K pixels, the main disadvantages being that hotlinked images are downscaled to 1280px and, as you might expect, the ‘free’ service is supported by advertising. For other files such as native Affinity files or PDFs, many of us have Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive storage space that we can use.

I was also surprised to see you even moved the avatars. Great host! Thanks

I endeavour to please!

Welcome, Maarten!

[edit] Ej Cool Alfred, even uploaded my avatar smile

I like to pick up an avatar if it’s readily available. The user is always free to change it!

… may I suggest a discreet 'Donate' button to help with the defraying of costs that are likely to accrue with this additional rise in traffic and administration.

Thank you for the suggestion, but there are currently no additional costs arising out of the installation and running of this forum on my web space. If traffic and/or storage needs increase to the point where I need to switch to a more expensive hosting package, I shall of course review the situation.

Thanks, Ali. I think the rationale behind their subdivisions is that a great deal of the functionality is ‘cross-product’. The UI for the iPad apps is obviously very different, but apart from the artboards in Designer, the single canvas (with no pasteboard) in Photo and the pages in Publisher, the apps have so much in common that dividing issues by product is often rather arbitrary, and your suggested ‘General & Cross-product’ section is quite likely to end up being used much more than the app-specific sections.

Dreadful move on Serif's part. Thanks for creating this section!

I agree, Ali, and you’re welcome! Speaking of welcome, I welcome members’ thoughts on extending and/or refining this section of the forums.

But Serif aren't Serif any more are they?

Serif still exists as a business entity, but they’ve been wholly owned by Canva since the acquisition a year and a half ago.

… in more ways than one!

When they closed CommunityPlus they took its contents with it, and the same with their previous custom-built forums and the vBulletin forums that they had in place between those two incarnations. The current forums aren’t yet read-only, but that’s just a matter of days away.

Alfred's input got me there fairly quickly, but didn't quite work where the top and bottom texts overlapped - unless I made a mistake somewhere?

I don’t think you made a mistake, Sandy. Each overlap in ‘Difference’ blend mode is going to invert the colour.

Geoff's, while more laborious, worked fine.

It’s certainly more laborious, but it’s obviously worth the effort if you need the flexibility.

Create a black and white — or coloured — background and put white Artistic Text on top of it. With the text object selected, go to the Blend Mode dropdown list at the bottom of the Colour tab and change the blend mode from ‘Normal’ to ‘Difference’. Where the background is black, the text will remain white; where the background is white, the text will turn black; and — if applicable — where the background is coloured, the text will take on the inverse of that colour (e.g. a green background will yield magenta text).

You’re not wrong, Geoff! British Double Summer Time (BDST) was introduced during the Second World War by not putting the clocks back at the end of summer in 1940, but continuing to put the clocks forward each spring in subsequent years.

My dad always tells the story of a local villager who put his clocks forward instead of back in the autumn and arrived for chapel four hours early on the Sunday morning ...

Four hours early?? I can understand his arriving two hours early, because I did that myself once — mistakenly reasoning that if you put a meeting back by an hour then it takes place an hour later, so putting the clocks back from 11 o’clock should mean changing them to 12 o’clock — but when I arrived at the local supermarket it was practically deserted, and according to the time displayed on the wall clock behind the checkouts it was mid-morning instead of early afternoon.

The Affinity site has always been dedicated to the Affinity apps. Any legacy downloads that you’ve found will have come from the old CommunityPlus support site.

The Starter Editions were little more than ‘bannerware’, with just enough built-in functionality to be useful for simple projects but grabbing every opportunity to tempt the user into upgrading to a full version. Now that Serif is no longer selling the ‘Plus’ products, let alone developing them, there’s no point in trying to resurrect any Starter Editions that you may have.
