I've been thinking of a new camera. I like the look and the reviews on the Sony FX3 .. I think it would take me up a level. I don't mind spending the money if I can convince myself that the films I make with the FX3 deserve it. And -- if I can convince myself to devote the time to learn a new camera well enough to be able to say "I'm glad I got this FX3 and spent all that money". So -- no new camera yet .. Right now I think the "little" ideas I have would not come out any better than on my old NX30.
One of the things about 4k is being able to crop into the image without losing resolution if your final output is 1080p I envy you that with your AX53.
Yes I agree on the "if's and buts" regarding upgrading. I too could afford to buy a more "professional" camera but although it may have more facilities and have better resolution/longer zoom/built in ND filers/more bells n whistles etc, It will be bigger and heavier. I find that I can pop my camcorder like the Panasonic VXF990 into my jacket pocket when I go for a walk or just hang it round my neck in the heat when in Spain. As I, and I presume yourself (along with others on the forum) fully understand how to use a camera in manual settings and their limitations can make a half decent job with what we have, and we won't be the next Steven Spielberg by spending two or three times the amount !
As I may have mentioned in other posts the only good point on the AX53 that I have found is the stabilization that suits me for the type of videos that I make when hand holding, apart from that the 990 is much better as it is fully controllable (unlike the AX53) more user friendly and the video quality is just the same.
My wife, who is a very good stills photographer is often asked what camera she has as it "takes brilliant pictures" she surprises them when she shows them her old Canon G9 compact. However she was bought up using manual 35mm SLRs with "proper film" when you made most shots count.
I am always surprised that some people buy a half decent camera/camcorder and have never used any manual settings and only use it for "baby on the lawn" epics, but hey ho if that's what they want then who am I to question them.
I sometimes use a setup like this if I am filming long takes indoors, however since getting the Sony AX53 it's almost made the gimbal obsolete. If I use the gimbal and the 53 together the video looks like it's made on a tripod but a bit of overkill.
ericlnz wrote:Gordon - Actually as you are able to post on the forum you could simply send him a PM. Sorry I should have realised that.
PM sent, hopefully I will get a reply, I need to take a new laptop to Spain for a while and I like to keep in touch on this forum. Cheers

I have sent several emails with different permutations and none have bounced back so they must have gone somewhere, just a thought have you ever sent an email to "Alfred" ?

So, if your trouble is decoding Alfred's email address:
admin[at]punster[dot]me
substitute an @ sign where it says [at] and substitute a period . where it says [dot]
Sorry but I assumed that "dot" meant a dot ! and what do you mean by "a period"

ericlnz I need to log in on a new computer. I can't find my password so I need to change it or can I find it on the computer that I am on at the moment ?. Regards Gordon
Albert Ross wrote:Very nicely done Gordon, I can see a lot of hard work has gone into that film. Nice scenery, lovely animation, acting was a bit wooden, but kudos to you for having a go. Makes you appreciate just how talented those who act for a living have to be.
The video had a "melodrama" feel to it. I'm assuming that was the intention?
The alien certainly had an interesting taste in men!!
The scenery is our garden and the field next to our house, as for being "a"bit" wooden" ? more like oak !!

The Appointment - 5 min
Well it was certainly interesting and well made, I hope I go the same way !
Here is the finished YEP, I hope the ending doesn't cause a heart attack !

ericlnz wrote:pberk wrote:Nice Eric .. a fun piece .. The white cat near the end was "robotic" -- right?
Yes "Moggie" is a battery driven "clockwork" cat. Given to me as part of my retirement present fifteen years ago. Two troublesome young ladies with whom I worked were behind it. She's a FurReal Kitty Cat from furrealfriends.com (Hasbro) in the USA. She's no longer shown on their website but I did see another like her years ago in a local shop.
She's also here in this video where more is explained https://vimeo.com/299351808
I must admit that cat is realistic in fact it would suit my wife, since our last one died a few years ago we decided that it is unfair to leave an animal in a cattery for 5/6 weeks at a time and taking it with us wasn't really an option.

I might actually "enlarge" the film in the near future as I ran out of talent making it !!
I did make a similar one that you have probably seen and was made in the same field a while back.

I saw this a second time Gordon .. Did you do the production completely on your own? By that I mean a one-man-band ..
I've do a number of those kinds of productions and it's hard framing shots and judging if you have what you want when shooting. The advantage is that you are depending only on yourself.
It's amazing what you can do on your own these days compared to days gone by in film production.
What's the hardest things for you? For me, it's getting an idea in the first place that I can do on my own (without help).
Yes I do it completely on my own, I obviously use a tripod and try and judge where I'm going to be in the shots, although the camcorder screen can be turned to face the front you cant see it from a distance. What I do is get a few trial shots to make sure I'm in frame and put something on the ground as a mark. I also tend to use 4k so that I can finally frame it in post if need be before final rendering in 1080p HD. The joys of being able to see the footage immediately and using as much as you like compared to our old "proper film" days certainly changed things ! Yes getting the idea in the first place is the hardest thing for me as well as everything has been done before ! In the "How Weird" piece of nonsense, I thought if there are aliens out there we assume that they are something that we can actually see, however what if they are very small or even microscopic ? I obviously thought it was going to be difficult to make a film about a tiny flying saucer so I made it a little bigger. The part where I trod on the saucer and squashed it in the ground took longer to make than the complete video ! I have one video on my site that has had getting on for a million views, all it consists of is a hastily taken car crash at Goodwood circuit. I did notice that the first part of "YEP" had almost 900 views on the first day that I put it on ! I only did it for a joke for my sister in law so there is no accounting for taste. I don't think I'll continue it any more as the extension https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHMIIMcY7a4&t has only had 40 views although I did take a bit of time syncing the sound to the video.
ericlnz wrote:Well done Gordon.
Don't forget Aliens are nothing new. They've lived with us for thousands of years https://vimeo.com/198802408
We should of course know that cats rule us ! In fact I have seen that before Eric as I like to delve into what sort of videos people make and how they are put together.
Yours are well made/edited and informative (incidentally what camera/camcorder do you use in later years)?
Albert Ross wrote:Do you always get those messages when you forget to pay your phone bill Gordon? I would try changing your network provider. It's all a bit spooky.
Sorry about that Albert ! incidentally the YEP film has an extension !!

Hey. That's intriguing .. Good start .. there's got to be more to this story.
My wife and her sister went to see this film (Nope) last week at the cinema and said that it was one of the worst films that they had seen in a long time and couldn't understand it and why "people" said it was brilliant in the reviews. They told me briefly what it was about so I quickly made "YEP"simply to make them laugh

@GStree It would have been beneficial if you had raised the reason for reposting the link.
The original link worked from my end using Firefox. I copied the url from the site, re-pasted it in the post and it didn't work. I've put the link on a new line and it works for me again. Does it work for you now??
Joe
@Gstree and @Joe
Both links work for me .. using Firefox ..
BUT are either of you guys registered to fly drones in the UK? Is there a fee to get registered?
Hi I simply posted the link because it didn't work, however it does since you reposted it. I don't know if you have to pay or how much it is to use a drone in the UK. I don't actually use it in the UK as it is in Spain where they have different regulations, you don't need to be registered at the moment but it will come in along with the rest of the EU I'm sure .
Joe wrote:Err, it's the same link I posted.

Except it doesn't work direct from your post although it looks the same ! mine does. Yours will if you copy it, most peculiar.
pberk wrote: Thank you GStree for the nice comment. I watched your drone footage posted above. I have no experience with drones. We will be taking a cruise to Alaska next summer (2023) and I got to wondering if folks would be bringing drones to launch from the ship to truly capture the scenery? I would imagine they won't allow this as it could be safety hazard. But it's a great tool for getting exactly the kind of footage you got. Very impressive.
I don't know if they would be allowed either ? You would be surprised at the quality you can get from the small drones that you can actually put in a pocket ! They fold up and can be controlled by a smartphone and are quite easy to fly. Mine is quite small but won't fit in my pocket, but will carry my 4K GoPro and gimbal.
A lot of mainstream films now use drones that normally use two people (one to fly it and one to control the camera) rather than using helicopters that are expensive to run and also need a bigger team do it as well.
This video will give you an insight to what is happening in the film industry.

Did someone say post your videos here? .. Ok .. Trip videos. Maybe that's a whole subject for discussion. They can be deadly dull and too long for human consumption. But, what the heck, this might interest somebody here.
Le Harve - Giverny - Monet - Rouen Tour ... 10 min
Sorry I have only just got round to watching this. I really enjoyed it as it was informative and well edited.
One of our favorite parts of the coastline in Spain is the Macenas beach area,It's about 4 miles down the coast from our place and it's difficult to show just how beautiful it is just by filming small parts from the land. So load up the drone complete with GoPro and a fully charged battery and send it on it's way !

ericlnz wrote:Thanks Gordon. It looks a dry area. I recall a recent TV news item about fires in Spain. Were they near you?
The start of the video was on my lawn at home in the UK and the first 49 seconds were also taken around my UK area, the view of the cornfield was taken from our garden gate ! Everything else was from our Spanish area and the white village on the hill is Mojacar that is about a mile behind us.
We have had a fair number of fires around us this year in Spain, fortunately our premises are quite well protected as we are surrounded by a lot of firebreaks and quite high concrete walls, the firefighters do an amazing job dumping water from helicopters and converted seaplanes to dampen things down.
In 2009 a lot of us were advised to go and sleep on the beach when the fires were really bad, and some of the buildings on the outskirts of Mojacar village were damaged as fires climbed up the hillsides.
If we had to get out in a hurry it's not really a problem for us as the beach is a 3 minutes walk down the road.

Yes I liked that, I note it was one of those days when you just get the perfect shot set up and focussed in and suddenly the wind blows it all away ! so I presume that the bee in the flower shot had to have several "clapper board" takes !
I haven't actually made anything constructive for myself except the piece of nonsense in the last post, but I have loads in the can to edit from Spain and several films for others including a 70th birthday that I filmed at the 360 "I" in Brighton. The problem is that with the gorgeous weather we are having in the UK at the moment the last thing I want to do is sit indoors editing on a computer ! Cheers
