Last night I installed MVPX6 V8.0 on a third machine (Win10Pro) and discovered that all codec locks except for 'Dolby digital audio encoding' and 'MPEG4 video decoding (MPLA)' were unlocked. No mfu file or reg file was used and this was before patches, which had no effect in this respect.

Given that there is no longer any access to Serif's servers, the only conclusion is that the disk had these unlocked on it unless someone can explain this differently.

Not Quite: in the UK there was the so-called Digital Edition which was version 8.1.0.something. There were no patches of which I am aware.

MVPX6 claims to be able to use external codecs when the tick box is ticked. Does anybody know whether the current form of codecs (IE dll's) work and whether or not they have to be in a special directory?

Having read Albert Ross's piece, I would suggest an added level of security of transfer would be to create the .reg file using the .bat as advised on the Serif Legacy page as this appears to contain much more information than the .mfu file (in my case, 584 bytes vs 85) and then executing it on the new machine after all else has been done. I know this works on Win7 to Win10. The .bat file does not appear work on XP.

Note that the .reg file tells you where to look for available features. If you dare, open the registry at this location on the old machine, capture the screen and save as a .jpg. Open the registry at the same place on the new machine and it should look the same. Note also that nearby is the location of the registration key.

Remember that if you edit the registry, a complete restart is required for the contents to be recognised. Take care and back-up before editing. I would recommend the Win7 complete partition image backup.

I have now completed some testing and can report the following:

Using any container acceptable to the program (IE file type that it will open) containing video in H264 codec with sound either in AAC or MP3, the file will open for editing at best resolution on my version of X6. It will open video in MPEG1 or MPEG2 but this results in low resolution.

So, provided that you have a video converter program that allows you to select the video codec as well as the audio codec (I use Abelsoft Converter4Video by choice), you can create editable files.

The REG file I have allows features 2, 4, 8, 13, 15, 23, 10 and 7 to be used. I am not sure which these are but I seem to recall that if you try a manual unlocking, the feature number is mentioned.

Chaps. It is likely that the unlock keys are registration code specific but as no support comes from serif, you could use regedit to put in another code.

I have suceeded in transferring one unlock from my MVPX6 running on Win7 to one running the same edition on a Win10 machine using the reg file so that only the following items are not unlocked: dolby  digital encoding, MPEG4 MPLA decoding. This should mean (and I am yet to check this out) that I should be able to convert video with reasonable resolution to a form that the program will accept (I already know that WMV works) and export to mp4. Will report more later.

Generating the reg file on the Win10 machine after installing the unlock codes from the Win7 machine showed that it was identical.

I can advise that the Digital Edition has nothing unlocked as far as I can see but have yet to try using the reg file on a copy on another machine.
