Re: A Quiz

An easy quiz: I scored 5/6. (The ‘Tom Swifty’ question struck me as a poor example, and I didn’t give the expected answer.)

I only got 3.

Re: A Quiz

I got 4. Didn't  know what a Pangram was, or assonance. Didn't think much of the Tom Swiftly, either.

There was a Tom Swiftly craze I think in about 1965.

PS Why does one need to register - did I do it previously? I seem to be able to post without it.

Re: A Quiz

I looked at question 1, didn't have a clue and left the site feeling deflated...

I’ve known about pangrams for very many years, but I had to make an educated guess about which of the three choices was most likely to be the description of assonance.

You registered, rather painlessly, when you first began using the site, providing little (if anything) more than your preferred username and an email address. When I started getting a few spam signups I enabled a set of questions (e.g. ‘What is the capital of France?’) and a feature that means you have to reply to a verification email, but spambots were able to get through even when I set nonsensical answers to the questions, so I silently disabled registration for short periods while I tried to identify a reliable method of control.

Re: A Quiz

I remember an episode of The West Wing where CJ was being coached on how to answer questions and she had been fully trained, then the trainer asked "Do you know what time it is?" and she said some answer that included the time, possibly pointing out with some annoyance that there is a clock on the wall.

The trainer then asked her the question again.

"Do you know what time it is?"

"Yes", she answered laconically..

The episode ended.

Can you amuse us by informing us of the questions and the nonsensical answers please? smile

"Do you know what time it is?"
"Yes", she answered laconically.

That sounds like the kind of answer I might give.

Can you amuse us by informing us of the questions and the nonsensical answers please?

Given the above, I suppose I could just say “Yes”! However, I shall indulge you on this occasion. They were just hoary old chestnuts like

Question: What is the capital of France?
Answer: F

There were other things such as simple sums that didn’t add up, but I can’t remember the exact details now.

Re: A Quiz

I feel that  "laconically" is not sufficiently related to "time", or "cautiously" to "prepared", to term it a Tom Swiftly in the classic manner.

I'm racking my brains to think of a good one, and managed this, so far:
He had examined the clock face in detail, he explained minutely. Not a good one, as "minutely" really relates to the "explained".

The farmers wife had cut off the  mouse's tail, as she detailed what happened. H'm, more of a pun....

These next are cribbed direct from the Merriam Webster website

Sometimes the puns are simple:

"Let's gather up the rope," said Tom coyly.

"Welcome to my tomb," said Tom cryptically.

"I can't find the oranges," said Tom fruitlessly.

Sometimes they require a little more thought to get:

"Don't you love sleeping outdoors," Tom said intently.

"Let's trap that sick bird," Tom said illegally.

"I lost my trousers," said Tom expansively.

And some are inspired:

"I just ran over my father," Tom said transparently.

And the all-time best Tom Swifty:

"I just dropped the toothpaste," said Tom crestfallenly.

Re: A Quiz

"So you are claiming you are late because you had to go back because you had forgotten to bring your vitamin tablet?" she asked unbelieveingly.

William

Re: A Quiz

"I prefer a vitamin and minerals tablet daily", he said ironically.

Very good, William, but why vitamin (singular) and minerals (plural)?

It took me a minute or two before I understood the “unbelievingly” example!

Re: A Quiz

Actually I missed "Multi " from in front of "vitamin" rather than miss off an "s".

Did you notice the abbreviated name of a second metal? smile

Maybe it’s just me, but I would still say “Multivitamin and mineral tablet” rather than “Multivitamin and minerals tablet”.

Not until you prompted me to look, whereupon I found one in the word “preFer”.

Re: A Quiz

So a Tom Swifty has to be a quote. I presume a statement like, "She blushed, readily." is just a pun.

I was so surprised to be asked to define "assonance", I fell over backwards onto an anthill.

I had not noticed that.

I was meaning within the word 'ironically'.

Ooh, there are two in there!
