Topic: Junk e-mails

Around a month ago I started receiving a lot of junk e-mails, all from different companies. They all have one thing in common though, they all start with "Stephen and Jill". Practically all of them seem to be wanting me to claim compensation from somebody or other. Another set appear to be from gambling sites, trying to entice me in with offers of "free spins".

I guess I must have clicked on something which triggered all of these unwanted e-mails. I simply delete them. Some are caught in the junk mail folder, but the odd one gets through to my inbox.

Does anybody recognize any of these companies, is there anything I can do to stop them sending these things?

Re: Junk e-mails

Sometimes it is worth searching (google, etc., I use duckduckgo) for any expressions which look like addresses. Like, in this case "stephenandjill". Sometime it yields more info about the "nominal" sender - often hijacked/spammed.

Not much use in this case. Several Steven and Jill's, and Stephens, too, but none look as if they can be the ones whose addresses have been misused.

Anyway, I expect you know all this, so good luck.

Re: Junk e-mails

My e-mail provider has a means of blocking unwanted mail. Under Settings, there is a sub-head Spam Settings where you can list senders you wish to ban. You will see the true sender of the email if you right-click the email and choose Show Source. Here's an extract from my list:

Note the use of the wildcard *.

Or you could obtain Mailwasher, https://www.mailwasher.net/ which I have used in the past, and is excellent.

In this case, Stephen and Jill aren’t the owners of an email account that has been hijacked for the purpose of sending spam. They’re the recipients of the unwanted emails.

Re: Junk e-mails

See if you have been affected by a data breach and someone has your email and personal data.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

Re: Junk e-mails

Thanks Joe.

According to that site my data has been breached, I had this result.

"Oh no — pwned!

Pwned in 1 data breach and found no pastes (subscribe to search sensitive breaches).

No idea what I can do about it though.
