Topic: Is the end in sight?

I am obviously referring to the use of smartphoness in society. At its height 9 people in ten owned a smartphone, but now it seems that they are becoming less popular. A small percentage of people have had enough of these devices because they are starting to realize that they are wasting too much time on them, and not living life to the full.
Here is an interesting article taken from the BBC website.

I beg to differ, Albert! It’s not at all obvious from your topic title. https://punster.me/images/wink.gif That minor quibble aside, what the article describes is a curious phenomenon. Thanks for the link. https://punster.me/images/smile.gif

Re: Is the end in sight?

My husband and I as older people, could not do without our Smartphones.  We could not dispense with ours now in todays society, as just one example we booked an Uber on our phone to take us to Wimbledon theatre it gives the make of car, registration of the Car, the drivers name and a countdown to his arrival on the smartphone.  The vast majority of the people gaining entry into the Theatre showed their Covid Passport on their smartphones.  On coming out we booked another Uber outside the theatre to go home on our phone and got the usual information until he pulled up outside.  Just an example of how the world is changing and how reliant we have become on our Smartphones. I have a new iPhone arriving today and I can just put the old and new phones side by side to Bluetooth all the info over onto the new phone.  Cheers FWIW Vicki

Re: Is the end in sight?

You obviously couldn’t do the Bluetooth thing with an ordinary phone, but tone dialling will get you through the menus on an automated system, and the technology that allows recognition of simple voice commands (e.g. ‘Yes’ to confirm your booking details) has been around since the 1970s.

Alfred. I agree with your point about automated bookings, the point I was making is that one receives real time information on the drivers location and ETA.  Cheers Vicki

Yes, that’s a huge improvement on the old days (and although you can get that via a landline at home, you obviously couldn’t get it without your mobile phone at the theatre).

Re: Is the end in sight?

I guess you can always think of a reason where a smartphone would be useful as in your example Vicki. In my experience of taxis, I find it reasonably straightforward to use my mobile from home to summons the taxi, they generally tell you how long they will be, you can even book one for a day or two in advance. Coming home I use my mobile phone to get my taxi.

I appreciate you cannot get a neat display of the location or ETA of the taxi using my 20th century method, but it works reasonably well.

A few years ago we went to see a recording of "Pointless" at Boreham Wood. We had to print out our email invitation and show it at the door to the studio. I think we were the only members of the audience to do this as most people had their invitations on their smartphones.

It's the same as ordering a takeaway from the local restaurant, most people appear to use an app on their smartphones for this, I pick up my mobile and order it as normal. No hassle and perfectly fine.

I think it's a question of what you have never had you do not miss.

Re: Is the end in sight?

I don't think Uber exists in Cornwall. Bit of a watste having a smartphone now I think about it big_smile , but we do have taxis that after you call them, they will be with you dreckly.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

Re: Is the end in sight?

Joe, you are of course correct about no Uber in Cornwall. as my husband would say......Kernow bys vyken.  Vicki.

Re: Is the end in sight?

In an emergency a basic just telephone and text mobile telephone can be best as one can just switch it on and use it to dial a number.

No need to wait for it to boot up, start the operating system, start an app or wait for an update, etc..

Re: Is the end in sight?

Mobile phones have other uses.  As a SatNav when you are out driving, or even walking. I use mine mainly to surf the net.  I rarely use it for phone calls.

Unfortunately our local COVID Tracer App doesn't work on my old Android so I have to manually sign in when required and my Vaccine Pass I have printed out.  For security concerns I never use my phone for internet banking.

Definitely the end isn't in sight.  But what concerns me is that folk have so much on their phone and should they lose their phone or it stop working.........

I had my phone stolen in Spain a couple of weeks ago that caused a bit of aggro, however I don't keep really important information on it like bank details or any documents like locator forms/ covid vaccination/boarding passes etc as we actually use old fashioned "paper copies". We travel a lot by aircraft and we have seen people having trouble with things on their phones for just about every flight we take, two weeks ago several people failed to get on the flight that we came back on because they had deleted things or couldn't find them.
Yes it is possible to use a phone for just about anything these days and that's fine until things go wrong.

Re: Is the end in sight?

Eric you are correct about other uses. We have just upgraded our phones and we both backup once a week to our laptops and the cloud. I now have a iphone10 and he has a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.  We normally upgrade every 3 or 4 years with a Sim free phone

4 uses my husband finds extremely useful with his smartphone is having the Ancestry app on his phone it saves carrying around hoards of paper whenever we are out and about doing further family history research, another is the CCTV notifications along with the Ring doorbell App and finally the IMDB app.

Lastly the saying that "google is your friend" helps enormously over a period of time, I would like a pound for every time we have both used it.
