Topic: A short Film

I made a short film some months back.  It might be of some interest to some on these boards since I used WebPlus in a part of the production of the film.

I notice that there is not much activity here, but no harm in posting.  Comments are welcome.

Re: A short Film

Well done. I remember it from a post on another forum a few months ago.

Re: A short Film

A very enjoyable video pberk, it had me guessing all the way through what the outcome would be.
It was beautifully made and made a lovely change from the normal kinds of videos people tend to put up on these forums. It must have taken ages to shoot and edit. More please.

No harm at all! The member list is currently quite small, but perhaps it will grow now that a link has been added to the FAQs on the Affinity Forums.

As are you, Paul. Thanks for sharing your beautifully made and hugely enjoyable video.

The other forum must have been the Vegas Pro forum.  I use Vegas to edit video and WebPlus for websites.   I assume you too?

Re: A short Film

Thanks Albert and Alfred for the kind comments.  In my youth, I had a brief career as a filmmaker.  Things were so much more difficult to do in those days.  Film was expensive and therefore limited.  Shooting required enough light.  A simple "superimposition" of a title was an optical effect that required lab work.  You needed an audio studio and a sound mixer.  And a myriad of other things and people to do them.  Now, with digital camera equipment, computers and video editors, it still amazes me how much one can in the way of filmmaking all by yourself.  It is possible to be a one-man-band.

Here's an example:

Brothers .. 9 min

Re: A short Film

In recent years I've come to appreciate what Alzheimer is.  Which brother was correct over their mother?

I recall another video you've made featuring neighbours and aliens which I enjoyed.  Please post the link.

Sorry I have only just seen this, I would have loved to have made things like that, but I'm afraid that I am too long in the tooth to learn.
Obviously some good work with filming/editing and a good understanding of film language. The "Twins" film I enjoyed as well.
And as you say things are so easy with modern digital equipment compared with cutting and splicing 8mm film that was expensive and so time consuming, especially if you didn't get it right the first time and had to re-shoot scenes on a different day/lighting etc. Although I did use to break the ratchet on the S8 cassettes and rewind the film to add effects with double exposure, and before that I used to develop my own 8mm B&W film when I was at school. I had a friend whose father worked for Kodak who would give me small amounts of 16mm B&W film that he would splice down the middle and re-perf so I was lucky.

Re: A short Film

Thanks Gordon .. I enjoy making these little story movies.  The hardest part (always!) is finding an idea that will fit into what I can do myself.  I sometimes use other people, but mostly I work alone.

Here's another one if any one has 8 min to see it.  I don't think I've posted this one here before.

Very good Paul, I assumed you transposed the second "you" ?

I'm not sure what you mean by "transposed."  I played both parts if that's what you mean.

Looking at the "second person" I thought that you had "flipped" the shot over in 2D in post so that your face was different, as certain marks on your face seemed to be reversed.

Good catch.  But if I remember right, I didn't flip it.  I shot it in a mirror.  It did give the "second" character a slightly different look and, it was easier to shoot it that way as space was limited.

I have always been a stickler for continuity in films and can normally pick things out that are altered or filmed at different times.
Some of the worse are car chase films that have a dent in one part that magically is repaired on the next shot !
The old clock on the wall was always a giveaway when a part was either a short or long scene and the clock didn't match up.
As you know peoples faces are not symmetrical, if you take a picture and cut it down the middle and flip one part and rejoin it, it can look like a separate person.

Re: A short Film

Yes mirror images annoy me and many phones take selfies this way.  For example a daughter recently visiting took a video while we were driving.  Suddenly I have a left hand drive vehicle whereas in fact I sit on the right (we drive on the left like the UK).  I can usually pick it up in photos by T Shirt lettering being back to front.

My Samsung S23 shows the selfie flipped but once you take the photo it flips it.

I'm sure my family all have iPhones which don't appear to do that..

I always learn stuff here in Alfred's forum .. I never knew about the Setting (in my S23 phone) to take a selfie that "doesn't" flip after you take it.

THe preview image, before you take a still or video selfie, is always the same, like a mirror.  What the setting can do is make it automatically flip (after you take the image) so your selfie does not look like a mirror image.  It's up to you.

Good to keep in mind when using the S23 to take footage to be used in a video production.  You may or may not want a selfie to be mirrored.  Of course, you can an easily flip it horizontally too in the video editor.

Re: A short Film

Are there emotional parallels with the story that is reviewed in this video?
