pberk wrote: Thank you GStree for the nice comment.  I watched your drone footage posted above.  I have no experience with drones.  We will be taking a cruise to Alaska next summer (2023) and I got to wondering if folks would be bringing drones to launch from the ship to truly capture the scenery?  I would imagine they won't allow this as it could be safety hazard.  But it's a great tool for getting exactly the kind of footage you got.  Very impressive.

I don't know if they would be allowed either ? You would be surprised at the quality you can get from the small drones that you can actually put in a pocket ! They fold up and can be controlled by a smartphone and are quite easy to fly. Mine is quite small but won't fit in my pocket, but will carry my 4K GoPro and gimbal.
A lot of mainstream films now use drones that normally use two people (one to fly it and one to control the camera) rather than using helicopters that are expensive to run and also need a bigger team do it as well.
This video will give you an insight to what is happening in the film industry.

Very interesting video on drones.  I liked what the guy had to say about these things being "tools".  What he meant was that the most expensive drone might not be the best for a particular job.  I would take that one step further and say that the "story" or what you want to say is the thing that should dictate the "tools" you use.  A perfect example is that you wanted to show the beauty of the coast line -- the drone was the right tool for that.

Re: Post your videos here

Drone flying in the UK is regulated and recently the laws have been updated to include the requirements for an operator id and flyer id. Proximity to people, buildings, cars etc. has also been reinforced.

Except it doesn't work direct from your post although it looks the same !  mine does.  Yours will if you copy it, most peculiar.

Re: Post your videos here

Not that I am taking sides, but on my computer Joe's link doesn't do anything, as you say Gordon "most peculiar"

Hi Guys.

@GStree It would have been beneficial if you had raised the reason for reposting the link.

The original link worked from my end using Firefox. I copied the url from the site, re-pasted it in the post and it didn't work. I've put the link on a new line and it works for me again. Does it work for you now??

Both links work for me .. using Firefox ..

BUT are either of you guys registered to fly drones in the UK?  Is there a fee to get registered?

Hi I simply posted the link because it didn't work, however it does since you reposted it. I don't know if you have to pay or how much it is to use a drone in the UK. I don't actually use it in the UK as it is in Spain where they have different regulations,  you don't need to be registered at the moment but it will come in along with the rest of the EU I'm sure .

Re: Post your videos here

There's an award winning film that is out called "Nope", it's quite long and is about people looking at things in the sky. I made a very short one outside in the field today and called it "YEP" but I don't think it'll win any awards " maybe a few "rotten tomatoes" !!

Hey. That's intriguing .. Good start .. there's got to be more to this story.

My wife and her sister went to see this film (Nope) last week at the cinema and said that it was one of the worst films that they had seen in a long time and couldn't understand it and why "people" said it was brilliant in the reviews. They told me briefly what it was about so I quickly made "YEP"simply to make them laugh

Re: Post your videos here

Very good Gordon, but just when it started to get REALLY interesting the film stopped. I guess you used the old adage, "leave them wanting more". I'll have to Google "Nope" to find out what it was all about. Thanks for the link.

I might actually "enlarge" the film in the near future as I ran out of talent making it !!
I did make a similar one that you have probably seen and was made in the same field a while back.

Do you always get those messages when you forget to pay your phone bill Gordon? I would try changing your network provider. It's all a bit spooky.

We should of course know that cats rule us ! In fact I have seen that before Eric as I like to delve into what sort of videos people make and how they are put together.
Yours are well made/edited and informative (incidentally what camera/camcorder do you use in later years)?

I saw this a second time Gordon .. Did you do the production completely on your own?  By that I mean a one-man-band ..

I've do a number of those kinds of productions and it's hard framing shots and judging if you have what you want when shooting.  The advantage is that you are depending only on yourself.

It's amazing what you can do on your own these days compared to days gone by in film production.

What's the hardest things for you?  For me, it's getting an idea in the first place that I can do on my own (without help).

I'm still using my ten year old Canon Legria HFG10 shooting 1080 50i.

Yes I do it completely on my own, I obviously use a tripod and try and judge where I'm going to be in the shots, although the camcorder screen can be turned to face the front you cant see it from a distance. What I do is get a few trial shots to make sure I'm in frame and put something on the ground as a mark. I also tend to use 4k so that I can finally frame it in post if need be before final rendering in 1080p HD. The joys of being able to see the footage immediately and using as much as you like compared to our old "proper film" days certainly changed things !  Yes getting the idea in the first place is the hardest thing for me as well as everything has been done before !  In the "How Weird" piece of nonsense, I thought if there are aliens out there we assume that they are something that we can actually see, however what if they are very small or even microscopic ?  I obviously thought it was going to be difficult to make a film about a tiny flying saucer so I made it a little bigger. The part where I trod on the saucer and squashed it in the ground took longer to make than the complete video !  I have one video on my site that has had getting on for a million views, all it consists of is a hastily taken car crash at Goodwood circuit. I did notice that the first part of "YEP" had almost 900 views on the first day that I put it on ! I only did  it for a joke for my sister in law so there is no accounting for taste.  I don't think I'll continue it any more as the extension https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHMIIMcY7a4&t has only had 40 views although I did take a bit of time syncing the sound to the video.

Yes "Moggie" is a battery driven "clockwork" cat.  Given to me as part of my retirement present fifteen years ago.  Two troublesome young ladies with whom I worked were behind it.  She's a FurReal Kitty Cat from furrealfriends.com (Hasbro) in the USA.  She's no longer shown on their website but I did see another like her years ago in a local shop.

She's also here in this video where more is explained https://vimeo.com/299351808
