Topic: google verification code appearing on live site

I have made a new webplus site, www.aliceglasnerova.com. Then I did the Google verification process. But now, the Google verification code appears at the top of all the live pages of the site. It isn't in my webplus coding, but I can see it in the source coding when I go to 'attach html' (see attached snip), and I cannot delete it - the 'cut' option is greyed out.

This has never happened on any of my other websites, but this is the first one I have have registered with Google Search console, rather than the old Webmaster tools. I asked Google to remove it from search, in the hope this would remove the code, but it didn't.
Please can someone help?

Thanks
Julia

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

If I understand the problem correctly, it appears to be something that Google is doing.  Can you create a new page called "testpage" with just some text on it where you "exclude" the page from publishing and from site navigation so you can test things.  The testpage should be as simple as you can make it.

Can you then upload this page to the same location as your website so that you can see what it looks like when "live" .. So the page would be accessed at  "www.aliceglasnerova.com/testpage.html" .. Does the same problem occur?

I don't want to mess you up -- so only do this if you feel you know what you are doing.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Hello, thank you so much for replying.
I had already tried this, but have tried again, sadly with the same result. I excluded the test page from navigation, published to disc folder (my local ftp folder for this site), used CuteFTP to transfer file to host (Hostpapa), rogue code still there. I could see the code in in the Webplus Preview Page setting, immediately after making the page, both via Chrome and Explorer, and also in the source code, accessed by the 'attach html' button, even before saving the page.
You can see it at www.aliceglasnerova.com/test1.html

I also tried making a completely blank master page and used it for another test page (test3) which still shows the rogue code.

Something weird .. it's picking up the rogue code from somewhere ???

Properties/site Properties/Search Engine/
Is it picking up something from here .. you probably know more about this than I do as I never use Google Validation.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Google didn't put that code on your page, you did when you pasted the HTML into the <body> section of the page instead of the <head> section. Open the page, including a master page, and look at each HTML source box for the Google verification code. The HTML source dialog box has tick box for paste into HEAD  and paste into BODY, tick HEAD.

The above works with WPx8, I don't have x6 installed.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

In addition to what tomH has outlined, in your file goto Properties > Site Properties > Google Validation and see if you have pasted it into the "Validate with a meta tag...." box.

This is using X8, I don't have X6 loaded.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Thanks very much Joe and tomH for your replies. I am sure you are on the right track, what you say makes perfect sense, but I can't see how I could have done this as I am using x6, which (maybe unlike x8) does not offer me a choice in where to place the validation code; this is the window I used:

https://i.postimg.cc/qzd0VS7n/Capture-validation-window.jpg

and now that the code is in the wrong place on all the pages, I cannot see a way to delete it. I will keep on trying today, but if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Many years ago I bought x8 and still have the product key although I do not have the software on my PC any more. If all else fails, do you think it is feasible for me to download x8 and try to move this site across into x8?  Does x8 allow you to edit the source code? Lots of questions - sorry!
Thanks, Julia

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Julie,

Leave X8 for the time being. It's best to try and find the error.

In X6 if you view a master page are you able to use [Alt][S] to get to the source. If so see if it's there.

At least you can now rule out that it's not in the google validate section which is the same as X8.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Thanks - I just tried alt s on the main master page - nothing happened...

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

I can only see the source code for the ordinary pages, not the master page, when I right-click and choose 'add HTML'.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Have you done what tomH suggested? Look in every html fragment and all areas that code can be entered in the body part of every page including masters.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Hi Joe, yes I did try.. I can see the code - this is how it appears in all the pages:

My problem is that I can't remove it, in x6 it does not allow you to cut anything from the code. When I added the Google verification, the  window did not give any option to paste into head or body sections, it looked like this:

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Julia,

I think we've exhausted all avenues and as I see it there are two options left.

1. Use dropbox or another sevice to leave a copy of your file and someone can then download it and check it.
2. Recreate the site again.

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Hi Joe,  thanks for this. Last night I decided to completely remake the site, so have been doing it all day  should have it done by bedtime. Will post on here if it succeeds!

Re: google verification code appearing on live site

Hello to everyone who helped me. Today I have completely remade and uploaded the site - and NO rogue text|
Cheers and thank you.
