Topic: Security Warning for visitors to WebPlus site

It seems that in the past year, visitors are being warned by their computer's internet security that my WebPlus websites are not safe and ask them if they would like to proceed or not.

I'm not sure why this is, it seems it is a new internet standard that maybe all websites must have SSL or some kind of website security.

My websites don't need security, they don't have confidential data features or other things that would require security.

Can anyone educate me or direct me to learn more about this issue?  Also, if I do need to implement SSL, what is the cheapest and easiest way to do this?

Re: Security Warning for visitors to WebPlus site

My website is hosted by one.com and SSL is enabled free of charge by default on all domains registered with them. Web address is always preceded by https. Would be worth asking your hosting company what they do.

I also use WordPress and for that there is a free plug-in - Really Simple SSL.

One of my sites is listed on Google as http: rather than https: .. Not sure what I can do about this .. would a redirect to https:  work?

What happens if you type https:// followed by your website name? I'm assuming, from what you have said, that this will not work and that you will either get an error or a redirect to http://. (If I use http:// to access my site it immediately changes to https://.)

You need to contact your web host as you will need an SSL certificate. Mine is provided FOC by one.com but it is possible that you may have to pay for it.

Thanks Gwyndy .. If I use https:// followed by the website name, then all is well.  I get the verified by cPanel icon in the right place.

The problem is that google search has the site as http:// and not https: ..

In which case, redirecting from http:// to https:// would work (as you surmised in your previous post).

Re: Security Warning for visitors to WebPlus site

Whoops ... something else came up  .. I find that I cannot get rid of the "download" history in Firefox browser.  One entry is sticky.  Possible virus but I'm sure I did not run this ISO file but only clicking an email.  The ISO file showed up in the downloads and I deleted it and then deleted the entry in the Recycle bin. (I'm running WIndows 10) .. but I can't get rid of the history.  This history only appears in Firefox -- not in Chrome or Edge browser.  Notice "discordapp"

Any ideas?  I'm thinking of uninstall and re-install Firefox.

I answered my own question.  I did an uninstall of Firefox .. It gave me the option to "refresh" -- that did it.  It loused up the look of the my Firefox, but everything was there (including bookmarks) and I got it back the way I like it.

Now .. no sticky and ominous entry in the Download history.  All ok so far.

How long have you used one.com?  Do you think the SSL will fix my problem?

Sorry, only just seen your questions.

I have used one.com for around 14 years. Very professional but maybe not the cheapest - this year's renewal is £85.04 including the domain name.

I am not an expert by any means but I would think that using SSL would solve your problem. I know that typing http://cowleyfamily.org.uk or just cowleyfamily.org.uk (my family history website) always defaults to https://.

Hope this helps.

I am also not an expert, but I agree! If the warning is merely about the connection not being secure, then using SSL will solve the problem.
