Topic: What top-level categories should there be?

All of the threads thus far are in a category named Discussion.

Would it be good to have other top-level categories?

If so, what should they be?

If there were Arts and Sciences, would that perpetuate the two cultures situation about which C. P. Snow wrote?

So should that be avoided?

For example, where would anything that relates to the BBC programme 'Fake or Fortune' be placed when it is about whether a painting is authentic and often includes scientific methods, such as spectroscopy to determine if pigments used in the paint were in existence at the time that the painting was purportedly painted?

So if there were, say, about seven categories, what should they be?

Please discuss.

As I indicated in my very first post to this forum, I think it would indeed be good to have other top-level categories. Hence my second sentence there:

No, I think it’s better to have a separate thread. I suspect I didn’t put much thought (if any!) into my wording at the time, perhaps having a vague idea that new users might indicate their preferences while introducing themselves.

In a ‘Television’ category, perhaps? Whilst ‘Discussion’ is tremendously broad, I don’t think it would be helpful to have categories that are too narrow.

How about a category of

Art in Art Galleries

where links such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU0EYA2d4_0 could be posted and art that is in art galleries discussed

and another category of

Our Art

where members of this forum can post their own art.

That way the two are separate collections of threads.

I second Joe's suggestion. Just the other day I was stumped on a PagePlus to PDF issue but found the answer on the legacy forum.

I did have that in mind, but I felt inclined to wait until closer to the time when CommunityPlus is due to close.

If you want to try copying it in one go, a simple way would be to use a PDF printer driver. Outputting to such a ‘printer’ results in the creation of a PDF file comprising the selected pages.

How specific can top level categories be please?

For example, which of these, if any, are too general, which of these, if any, are too specific.

An ‘Art’ category would be like the ‘PagePlus’ category, but it seems to me that having a ‘Modern Art’ category would be analogous to having a separate category for PagePlus 8 (and to continue the analogy, having a category called ‘Museum of Modern Art, New York’ would be like having a category dedicated to PagePlus 8 PDF Edition).

Surely, art would be a sufficient theme holder for art topics. There wouldn't be enough posts  covering all art to need so many headings in the forum, and we are talking headings, not individual posts..

Art is a favourite with William, and I would respect his plea if there were sufficient posts to justify  his proposed "micro-divisions."

But I like science and maths topics to exercise the little grey cells, and I wouldn't ask for headings to separate the themes. Like physics, pure maths, chemical science, technology... you name it.  Material in these headings come occasionally in bursts - a question or conundrum  is posed, and many hands go to solve it. Then it goes dormant for a while. 

Interesting items under all headings come along frequently and maybe could be exhibited in their own thread.

Is ‘Art & Literature’ too broad? I’m inclined to think so, but I’d like to hear what other members think.

I suspect that most of us think of things like drawings, paintings and sculpture when we hear the word ‘art’. There’s also ‘the arts’, which would include music and literature, and the performing arts.

Well, the study of subjects such as French as a language is regarded as an "Arts" subject.

The poem is, in my opinion, really good.

So in which category, and in which thread within that category, would it be posted in this forum?

Posted as just forum text like this, or in an image produced using Serif software?

If the latter, which font would be a good choice?

Would the poem be the same regardless of the font or would the font nuance its meaning?

Here in this topic clearly wouldn’t be the right place, but since this section is currently such a mishmash I don’t see any reason for it not to reside in a new Discussion topic until such time as we have a more suitable category.
