Topic: Automatic column border lines? X5

After you make a text box and designate a certain number of columns for the text box, is there any way to automatically put line dividers between the columns?  A table has line dividers but I don't know anyway to flow the text overflow into the next table column.  Maybe there's a way to do that.  Currently I'm manually putting in lines between columns.  Thanks for any help.

see attached images. This works in PPX9, not sure about X5.

Re: Automatic column border lines? X5

Exactly what I need but looks like not present in X5.  See image for "Frame Setup" which seems to be the equivalent function and which lacks the column line function.  This is almost enough to make we want to switch to X9.  I worry about backwards compatibility with X5 files which I have a ton of.  Thanks so much for the reply.

Unless you have a copy of X9 it may be very hard to find—at least with a valid product key, but I imagine it would be backward compatible. I recently activated X9 and everything I had in X6 works fine.

I have just installed X5 to check, so here are your answers.

No. In X5 you have to add them manually using the Line tool. It was one of the features that was requested, and was eventually added in version X8.

I don't know anyway to flow the text overflow into the next table column.

Try Insert/Break/Column Break. (Or use Ctrl+Enter)

Re: Automatic column border lines? X5

Sorry, I see now you were asking about flowing text in a table. That is not possible in any version.

Perhaps you could use a columned text frame, and place an empty table over it for the column dividing lines. But adding separate vertical lines would be just as easy.

I seem to remember there was a problem with X5, but it may simply have been that — unlike X6 and later versions — it can’t open X9 files. As far as I’m aware, X9 should be able to open files saved from X5, although you probably have to install the appropriate version (32-bit or 64-bit).
