Re: Try Affinity Free For 6 Months

I thought I might try this offer. I don't really have any need to 'upgrade' from PP, PhP or DP, but it would be interesting to try Affinity, and maybe I'll get hooked.

But having got to the download page (see picture) I can't make out what I need to download. There seems to be 4 files each for the three Affinity programs (for Windows). Which do I need, of do I need all of them?

I’m sure your question is a Frequently Asked Question, Geoff, so I’m very surprised that there’s no link to the relevant FAQ article:

What is the difference between Windows Installer types and which one should I use?

Thanks, Alfred. I never knew there were different types of Windows for different computer setups.

Re: Try Affinity Free For 6 Months

I believe ARM-based Windows is very much the ‘new kid on the block’, having been introduced only in the last five years or so. ARM (Acorn RISC Machine) itself dates back to the late 1980s.

RISC stands for Reduced Instruction Set Computer, so it isn’t as risky as it sounds! There have been versions of Windows for other devices such as mobile phones, but I doubt that they’re still in use.

Wow! My fist computer, back then, was a BBC B, which was Acorn! Allowing for inflation, that machine was a little more expensive than my latest laptop! My 9-pin Epson printer back then, was much more expensive compared to my current HP (but the ink tapes were much cheaper than HP's refills!)

Re: Try Affinity Free For 6 Months

I have tried all the Affinity apps apart from the Designer. The Photo is brilliant and will do far more than ever I will need but it is still in a class of its own.
I still find that Publisher is still a very steep climb, it's focus is completely different and seems designed to appeal to graphic designers who want brochures, advertising and publicity material. Not book publishing that PP does so well.
With all its faults I still find PagePlus is so much more user friendly, so much so that I can use it for many uses that Publisher won't touch. These include easy cropping of a picture, dealing with the design of logos, removing background and bringing other apps into the program such as Photozoom to increase or decrease the resolution of a picture.
