Topic: This computer seems to be working now SOMETIMES

This computer seems to be working now.

This morning, Saturday 7 September 2024, I was looking at the news pages and suddenly the screen went blue with yellow lettering, but it was not totally crisp, a bit funny looking in places, with a message that my computer had a problem and needed a reboot and data was being gathered.
0%

Well, the 0% did not increase, and wondering if this was genuine or some sort of virus, I turned the computer off with the old time way of holding the switch down for 30 seconds or so and trying again. The screen was black but a light on the caps lock button was flashing slowly 1 2 3 4-5 repeatedly.

Posting to start the thread in case it crashes again.

Edited to add SOMETIMES to the title in view of what happened afterwards.

Re: This computer seems to be working now SOMETIMES

Does anyone know what is going on please?

I was typing a followup post and suddenly the keyboard jammed.

So I did the hard switch off and tried again.

A couple of times just a bright screen.

Then an hp logo (this is a Hewlwett Packard computer) and it seems to be working again.

Re: This computer seems to be working now SOMETIMES

But back to the first post and follow on from there.

So after that I tried again, several times, getting just a light screen one time maybe two times.

Then I got a screen with the hp logo and a curved line went from 6 o'clock to 7 o'clock but seemed to freeze.

So I tried again and I got the hp logo and then a start up.

Nothing about needing to restore Windows.

Re: This computer seems to be working now SOMETIMES

So, I am wondering if it will crash again.

Has anyone met this phenomenon please?

On for a while now with no more problems ... yet.

I had the computer on for a while, did some of the Duolingo Welsh course, then turned off the computer and was doing other things for around two hours.

About five minutes ago I turned the computer on, came to this forum, then I got the blue screen with the message again, but it had 100% and went off after literally just a few seconds and the computer rebooted and so I came to this forum and I am posting this note.

This sounds very much like what’s known in the trade as a BSOD (‘Blue Screen Of Death’). Your computer is sick — although not necessarily terminally so, despite the inclusion of the word ‘Death’ in the expansion of the acronym BSOD.

As noted previously, this is a rather meaningless statistic. Some (many?) of the ‘viewers’ may be bots, and the human viewers who haven’t posted have either decided they aren’t interested or don’t feel that they have anything useful to contribute to the discussion.

Re: This computer seems to be working now SOMETIMES

Maybe it was simply doing a Windows update. This can take several, even many, minutes.

Ah, thank you

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_screen_of_death

So a feature of Windows, not a virus or similar.

Thank you.

I did recently get a message saying that it was unable to update I think it was Microsoft Edge.

So maybe related as I was writing in this thread, viewing in Microsoft Edge, when it happened.
