Re: Post your videos here

I hope that you guys are all OK in this extreme weather ? After almost a year with no rain at all in Spain we had a serious amount that has caused a lot of damage to just about anything it got near ! Luckily our place is ok as we live in an area that is virtually impossible to flood unless we get a sudden100ft wave !
We are in the UK at the moment but popping back for a quick 10 days in a couple of weeks, we are only going for that short a time as we are taking my 84 year old brother that has never been abroad  or flown in an aero plane before ! I just hope that the weather bucks up down there. I have got my Panasonic HCX 2000 camcorder up for sale at the moment as I find that I just don't use it since I bought it !  It is unmarked and has only done 56 hours of work that is shown on the internal software, and it still looks brand new. It's a fabulous camera with all the bells n whistles, so any budding Steven Spielberg's out there this is your chance ! so make me an offer !!  When we came back from Spain the other week we found our garden and lawns were covered in mud caused from flash floods that had happened when we were away, but luckily nothing had got into the house.

In the words of the late great, Tommy Trinder, (I do love a good cliché) "You lucky people".

I have not one, not two, but three videos for you to enjoy, hopefully...

Last month we visited our old friend Richard in Gloucestershire, the first time since the pandemic, and he took us to a couple of new locations where we had not been before.

The first one is "Saul Junction Marina" where we enjoyed looking at the brightly coloured canal boats. https://youtu.be/kS6WxDE58qw

The other new location was the "Batsford Arboretum", to see the Autumn colours. https://youtu.be/vbKwzi9bAkk

The final destination was the old favourite "WWT Slimbridge" to watch the wildlife in all its glory. https://youtu.be/gAwLR26CEMY

I hope you enjoy them - around 5 to six minutes long.

I enjoyed all three Albert, however my favorite was the first one of the colourful canal boats. Unfortunately since we came back from Spain I haven't been able to use a camera as I can't stand up or walk as I am confined to bed with two very painful herniated discs !

Re: Post your videos here

Thanks Gordon, I'm glad you enjoyed my efforts.

Sorry to hear of your confinement to bed, it must be very frustrating. Please excuse my ignorance, but Is a 'herniated disc', the same thing as a slipped disk?

I do hope you get better very soon.

Yes it is, (and that's what all we old boys all know it as), but that's the technical term on the MRI scan. I don't know if I will be able to recover enough to fly off to Spain in a weeks time though !!!!!

Re: Post your videos here

Thanks Albert, especially the canal.   The UK canal system was something that I read a lot about prior to leaving UK in December 1970.  Fortunately much of your canal network still remains.

In Autumn 1970 I made a Saturday evening canal trip with friends out to Greenford and back.  The return was in the dark and travelling was out in fading light.  I shot some Regular 8mm film.  It was my last UK film and here it is   https://vimeo.com/50872591  "1970 movie of a Saturday evening canal barge trip on London's Grand Union Canal".  Being an old 8mm film movie the image quality isn't the best but it brings back memories.

Thanks for that ericlnz, did you put that on digi yourself ? I have tried (with variating success) over the years by using my projector on a grey screen and using a camcorder that is sort of OK. I still have all my old 8 and S8 films that I occasionally have a look at but sold my last S8 sound camera to a guy in the USA.

Re: Post your videos here

Gordon - Yes, a few years ago now.  I used a small white screen and my Panasonic SD tape camera.  I digitised all my movies. The quality varied depending on the original quality.  MVP was used for editing, removing splices and adjacent frames, altering colour balance etc.  The audio was on stripe but I had my original tapes to use.  It meant stretching out parts the video to maintain sync, with frames removed for splices, and to correct any parts where I could improve sync.  I was new to video editing and in hindsight should have switched off "temporal resampling" in MVP to avoid ghost frames But actually looking at my source avi I find that most of my ghost frames are where my camera shooting 50i has captured two different frames from the screen!  My original films were shot at 16/18 fps.

Sorry Gordon to hear you are laid up.  Doesn't sound like fun.  Here's a little video to pass the time.  I made this some years back. Sorry if you've already seen it.

Thanks for that Paul, brilliant! it just shows with a bit of inspiration and talent you can make a good short interesting little film without all the bells n whistles equipment ! also not having to pay anybody else (unless it's your twin brother)?
I am off to the doctors in the morning to see the results of the MRI scan and hopefully get enough pain killers to help me through this. I am determined to fly to Spain on Saturday as I am taking my 84 year old brother with us for his first trip abroad and his first on an aero plane ! He is so looking forward to it and I can't let him down. Wish me luck !!!!

Thanks Alfred, I'll let all you boys know how I get on at the doctors and hopefully they won't have to tell me that I need to book a one way trip to Switzerland !!!!

Re: Post your videos here

Well I have the results, lots of big words that are new to me regarding problems with my lower back like "evidence of generalized disc dehydration and "scattered osteophyte formation" and lots more ! Basically it means my back is f***** !
I have lived a life around racing on two and four wheels from 1968 to 2013 with Motocross (used to be called scrambling) to out and out car racing. I was a sponsored car driver for years with about 300 race wins and two British championships and was in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) support races for several years, and raced abroad in international events. Also I have been a motor mechanic since 1962 so lifting heavy parts have also taken it's toll. Possibly if I had lived my life wrapped in cotton wool I might not have worn myself out like I have ? but who knows as I am often going to funerals of my friends who are several years younger than me, I think it's the luck of the draw. What does the panel think ?

Yes.  The luck of the draw but exercise, diet and low stress seem to help.  Easier said than done. Here's hoping you start doing better soon.

Thanks Paul, I am on lots of pain killers at the moment and right or wrong we are flying down to Spain tomorrow 16th as I have mentioned previously and I just hope that things work out for us, I have been lucky in life (up to now)!

Re: Post your videos here

Let us hope that things go as smoothly as possible Gordon - best of luck mate.

Last Tuesday we trundled our way into East Sussex to see how Sheffield Park was doing with all of the autumn colours on the trees. We were rewarded with some beautiful scenes, and not a little amusement watching a young lady in her 60s trying to get to terms with her smartphone attempting to take a picture of a newish garden that the National Trust were landscaping - how we laughed!!

https://youtu.be/AqjWYMv-bGY I do hope you enjoy it.

Re: Post your videos here

Thanks Albert but you shouldn't laugh at the young oldies smile

Re: Post your videos here

What’s your definition of ‘young oldies’, Eric? We’re probably almost all young oldies here!

I feel that I am qualified to do so though Eric, being one myself if that makes any sense, it's only youngsters under the age of 70 who are not allowed to laugh as that would be disrespectful. I must say that the lady in question has my sympathy, I have very little idea of how to operate these infatha-mobile gadgets when it comes to taking pictures, what's wrong with a straightforward camera - it works for me.

What is a 'young oldie(s)', I guess the definition depends on how old you are. To a 90 year old, it's probably around the 70 year old mark, but to a middle aged person, it's more likely to be around 60.

Re: Post your videos here

Old video from the days when my wife, Amy, taught watercolors for Celebrity Cruises in Alaska.  I carried the water. Each summer, for five years, we did four one week cruises back to back.  It was hard work at times, but mostly lots of fun.

Alaska 2011 ... 9 min.

What is a ‘middle aged person’? To someone in their twenties or below, it’s probably around 40, but to someone in their forties it’s likely to be 50 or more!

I heard “She’s a ten!”

Thanks Alfred.  I heard it as tent so wasn't far off.  But even ten doesn't make sense to me.  Probably a US expression!

Maybe not far off the sound, but way off the meaning! I’m not sure that Paul’s wife would appreciate being described as a tent.
