Topic: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Good morning and thanks to Alfred for adding me to this forum.

I've been using Craft Artist 2 for years now. I bought the download version way back and still have my saved files and reg code and apart from a time when it didn't work on W10 and then it came good it has worked great - even on W11.

For some reason yesterday when I opened it - the splash screen was strange and then the program would not open. I have uninstalled and reinstalled about 4 times now and still get the same result. Because the splash screen is kind of basic I thought it might be a Flash problem so I made sure to uninstall Adobe Flash as well as CA (using Revo Pro) and then let it reinstall Flash again with the new install. But still the same problem.

The only new program I have put on is MainType which I bought the other day to help sort out my fonts. I don't know if that did anything though. I was working with both programs the same day - maybe a coincidence. I uninstalled them both anyway and just tried the clean reinstall of CA again (after removing Flash first) and still no luck. I can't see that anyone seems to have had the same problem and I'm stumped. Before I go drastic with a clean reinstall of W11 I just thought I'd ask here.

Thank you smile

Hallo leesyloo_au'

I don't use Craft Artist, but like other Serif programs you can do a "reset" by holding Ctrl as you open it. That often corrects faults. Have you tried that?

Hi GB - I hadn't heard of that but I just tried it and it didn't fix it - but thank you.

I forgot to mention that I have also tried the repair option - that was the first thing I did when it happened but it still is happened so that's when I started my full uninstall/reinstall journey trying different things. Revo removes the registry entries etc so I'd hoped that would help when reinstalling but it didn't. I might have to try a clean W11 reinstall hmm

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Welcome, Alisa! Thanks for joining us here.

Your splash screen does indeed look strange, but I’ve used High-Logic MainType for many years and I’ve never seen a problem like this, so I’m inclined to agree with your suggestion that it’s probably a coincidence.

Reinstalling the operating system seems like a very drastic step! When you tried the Ctrl-runup you should have been rewarded with a dialog asking you to confirm that you want to reset your user settings. Did you see that? And if so, did it include an ‘Also delete local settings files’ checkbox? I have to confess to clutching at straws here, because I would expect Revo Uninstaller to have zapped the local settings files along with everything else related to your CraftArtist installation.

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Hi Alfred smile

Yes I did see the dialog box come up like you stated regarding resetting user settings which I selected. And yes Revo should have also deleted them as well in all my uninstalls.

Haha yeah I know the reinstalling W11 seems drastic but TBH I haven't done it in a while and my computer has been running quite slow lately - might be to do with that latest update - 24H2 idk. And CA has been extremely frustratingly slow - it seems like every 10 seconds it was not responding and I'd have to wait. Not sure if it is the program or my PC. I do have 16GB RAM and thinking about upgrading that (not just for CA but for everything).

I have a laptop and installed CA on that and tried to work out where all the system files went to try to look at them on both the lappy and pc to see if they matched - was something missing/different on the PC?? Found some in the appdata roaming folder but they all matched.

It is an odd one that is for sure. Yes I have put CA on the laptop but it is small and my PC has a much larger screen and I can work better on it. I've just made so many things in CA - I know there are other options but I just want to (try to) keep using it for as long as I can.

Thanks for your suggestions - I'll keep working on it and see if I can get it back smile

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Well I have been on quite a journey since I last visited. I first tried things like Process monitor and Windows debug (after doing a lot of googling) to try to pinpoint what may have been causing the problem but I couldn't work it out. So yesterday was spent reinstalling Windows 11 - it took so very long because I kept hitting speed bumps with bitlocker locking up my drives - and then having to google and ready many, many pages to get the right cmd codes to unlock it because a lot of the advice was old and Microsoft changes things but anyway it got done.

After putting on the bare minimum of progs that needed putting on I tried CA and crossed my fingers - got excited when I saw the old familiar splash screen - and then it's been back to ????? since. The program opens but the splash screen still hangs with "Loading Craft Artist". It used to always open with the Daisy Trail info etc which I just closed. I left it a while to see if it would fully open bit it doesn't. So I check Task Manager and it's "running" there - the CPU and memory use is constantly rising - falls a little and then rises more.

I uninstalled and reinstalled again today - giving Windows more time to do all it's updatery. Started CA - still the same. Then while CA was trying to load I noticed something else - I couldn't load any browser pages etc (This site can't be reached). Shut it down in Task Manager - refreshed browser pages and they're back. So I rebooted modem and restarted PC - tried again - same result.

I should mention that in the meantime I did try the hold down CTRL while starting thing - just to see if that did anything - got nothing to lose because I have no settings saved - everything had been wiped clean. Didn't help. So I thought bugger this I'm going to open CA up on my laptop - where I installed it recently - and it was opening up fine. Would you believe the same thing is happening? Right down to the "This site can't be reached" and my laptop informing me that I am currently offline (even though my wifi icon is on saying I have internet access). CA is cutting me off somehow while trying to "load".

I know - nobody can probably help - it's weird. I just needed a vent haha. But if anyone has any ideas?? I need a break - It's lunch time for me here in Australia so I'm off to have something. Thanks for listening smile

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

OMG!!!!!!!!!! Ralph!!! thank you so much!!! That worked!!! I just did the reg file option. I tested it on my laptop first and CA opened.

I had actually been thinking of what could be wrong and had literally been thinking of trying to open it with no internet - not thinking anything about the DT site - but I was thinking it was something to do with it trying to access my files from One Drive. I just hadn't gotten around to trying it yet because I had been busy today and to be honest had enough of thinking about it - the whole drama has been stressful - reinstalling and trying to put everything back on - which was probably a good thing in the end - clean up some stuff and not put back some progs I haven't used in ages. And others can wait until I really need them.

Once again - thank you Ralph and for Alfred for this forum - I hope this might help anyone else who may have this problem - because if anyone else is still using Craft Artist - it is going to be happening to them too!!

Yes the fonts look a bit weird - the ones I used haven't been installed back on yet so they've been subbed with system fonts  wink

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

leesyloo_AU,
I can confirm that my wife is suffering from this issue too. She originally thought I'd made changes to her Win 10 PC but I hadn't; she confirmed she'd last used the program successfully last Sunday 23rd Feb.
The symptoms are that the program starts, goes to its standard opening window and then sits with a rotating 'waiting' cursor. Using the MS Process Explorer tool, I can see the program isn't doing much other than increasing the task's memory significantly over a ten minute period. None of the program's options respond to cursor clicks and the program has to be manually 'hit on the head'

Here's what I've tried so far.

1) Checked for recent Win updates; there was one security update which was not eligible for restore.
2) I used an image restore of her system from late January to restore the C: volume. No change.
3) I used the Install CD to install onto an alternative newly installed Win 11 system and ran the program. No change.
4) I disabled the Internet connection, turned off the Win 11 'set clock automatically' option and changed the system clock date to 23 Feb 2025. Craft Artist worked!!
5) Went to the Win10 system and did the same.  No change!!
5) checked versions of Craft Artist [right click on file in File explorer]:
    Win10 version 2.1.0.37 dated 18/5/2016
    Win11 version 2.02.38 dated 4/10/2013
6) typed this in so other readers could see it.
7) Pull hair out! I'm a retired computer software and hardware engineer and none of this makes sense...
8) Consider a testing scenario to determine whether it's the clock setting, Internet connection or something else that allows the program to 'work'.

Julian

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

By the Way, should have added re. point 4) above. With the Internet disconnected I changed the clock back to 'today' and Craft Artist still worked, so it's possibly related to the internet connection!!
And I didn't discover that the versions were different until after my testing, so that may have an effect too.

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Aaaaargh.

Just noticed that the thread had been updated wit a resolution, so I'm off to try that out.

Oh Julian I feel for you and your wife with the troubles - it is frustrating isn't it? Hopefully the link Ralph gave with help you too - it's a very simple fix and got everything up and running again for me so hopefully will for your wife again too smile

Thanks for the link, Ralph. I’ve often wondered about the DaisyTrail site supposedly having been shut down, because I discovered some time ago that references to images on the site (e.g. in newsletters) still worked, even though it was no longer possible to log in or even to access free downloads.

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Thank you Ralph. This link proved very useful, and seeing these posts most timely. I used CA2 about a week ago, and then came to open it yesterday to sort and add prices to some photos of crafting supplies I want to move on, prior to moving house ourselves.

Sure enough, it just hung there, doing not a lot, but once I applied this fix, all was well again. Yay! https://punster.me/images/thumbup1.gif

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

ooohhh I have been having a new glitch. I hadn't really started using CA properly since opening it up to see if it would open after installing the reg file from the affinity site.

Today I decided to open it to get back to designing and noticed that now I am getting a script error that pops up twice asking me if I want to continue to run scripts - if I choose yes or no it makes no difference - the program eventually shuts down and restarts. The script error pops up when I go to the Digikit Browser and I can see down in the bottom right corner there are now links to the Affinity site - I think these links must have the scripts in them and are causing the problems.

I can add things from my digikits Ok but within a couple of minutes CA shuts down.

I just tried opening CA and NOT going to the digikit browser to see if it would still eventually shut down and yes it did - I just let it sit there while I typed here and within a couple of minutes it shut down again. Just posting here to see if it's just me or is anyone else having the same problem??

Yes, I can confirm I get a similar thing happen if I click on 'Add items from Digikit', followed by closure of CA2 if I click the yes option.

https://i.postimg.cc/rDZPWLwy/image-2025-03-03-134228809.png

But when I click the no option, it does seem to let me carry on, adding digikit item(s) and dragging them on to my page. I left it running awhile and ended up closing it down myself.

However, I just re-opened CA2, hit the yes option (twice) and it did let me add the digikit items.  But, when I dragged them on to the page, and then tried to move them around nothing happens other than getting a green circle with a diagonal line through it, whether on the page or on the side.

Not good! https://punster.me/images/crying.gif

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

Oh no KarenPL sad .

For me it doesn't matter if I choose yes or no to running scripts - CA just shuts down after a couple of minutes. It looks like Affinity has removed the Daisy trail links in that bottom right square and replaced them with Affinity links - fair enough - but that is what is now causing the problem I'm sure, because it's not showing up properly in that square and the scripts are creating gremlins in CA.

And we can't go onto their forum and say anything because CA is a legacy program and they don't accept tech support questions about it - so how do we let them know?? hmm

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

OK after having lunch and a bit of a think I thought I would test out the first option given in the link Ralph gave ^^. I tried it on my laptop first.

Option A

Disable your Internet connection ......... Start CraftArtist 2 and once the program has started right click the WiFi or Ethernet connection again and select Enable to reconnect to the Internet.

I actually left the internet off for about 5 minutes while I opened CA and this time the offending "square" had the Daisy Trail info back in it.

https://i.postimg.cc/m1N1w1VS/Screenshot-2025-03-04-160856.jpg

No script error pop ups - so that was good. I was able to open up a file with no probs and go to the digikit browser - no script errors - because I wasn't online so the "square" wasn't trying to link to Affinity. I turned the wifi back on and let the program sit for a while to see if it would shut down but it didn't.

So I did the same on my desktop. It was all good until I turned the wifi back on and tried to go to the digikits - of course then the "square" stopped showing Daisytrail pic and the script errors started again - trying to link to Affinity. But the only different thing is that after hitting No (to wanting to run scripts) twice to get rid of the errors. I have left the program open - to see if it would start the shutdown/auto startup loop - but it hasn't and it's been around 10 minutes so far.

It's an annoying workaround and hopefully we might get another reg file fix. wink

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

I've just opened CA2 up again today, having been browsing on the Serif group page on Facebook, which reminded me to give it a go.

Fingers crossed, it all seems to be working OK, even without disconnecting from the Internet first. Perhaps down to computer reboot, or possibly even the Microsoft update that came in when I shut down last night/opened this morning?

If you’re referring to the grey box at the bottom of Darren Wright’s post to the Affinity Forums, that’s simply a download link for this text file (which, as stated in the box, is an 844-byte file named ‘CraftArtist2 Start Fix.txt’). As indicated in the accompanying post, you can use that file to prevent the CraftArtist 2 from trying to access the DaisyTrail website.

Re: Craft Artist 2 sudden splash screen/start up error

O dear. Like others I used option a and it worked ....joy unconfined....but when I looked through the digikits, the screen froze. ...despair ditto. No message.

Would using Option B correct this? Am nervous about messing about with the directory so havent tried that yet.

I get nothing useable when I click on the text box download indicated in your reply. Is it not straightforward?

New to this. How would I find Darren Wright.

Thank you for your time, Alfred.

That’s very odd. What browser are you using?

It should be! In the absence of a further information I can’t say why it isn’t straightforward for you.

You should be able to contact Darren via private messaging on the Affinity Forums, but you would need to sign up in order to use the PM service on there. What do you want to ask him?
