So here is a thread about calculating square roots by hand.

I found the following.

i have had a quick look, hopefully I can study it in detail later and have a go.

Of interest have a look at the use of the square root of 3 and 3 phase voltage.

Somewhere over the rainbow, weigh a pie ...

Re: Calculating square roots by hand

Is there a sentence to remember the value of the square root of three.

I was told

I wish I knew
the root of two

and I read of

European three phase voltage is 400 VAC. Dividing that by the square root of 3 yields a value of approximately 230 VAC, which is the single phase voltage. Prior to harmonization in 1995, the single phase voltage was 240 VAC in the UK.

At first I thought that was telling me the answer is 1.4143423, which is clearly wrong, since the value to four decimal places is 1.4142. I can see now that we aren’t supposed to count the letters in “the root of two”!

That’s the first line of a mnemonic in verse. On its own it only gives the value of pi to five decimal places, which is hardly worth it given all the letter-counting you have to do. The comma for the decimal point is a nice touch, but I’d rather just remember 3.14159.

The full version of the verse, yielding twenty decimal places, is as follows:

Sir, I bear a rhyme excelling
In mystic force and magic spelling
Celestial sprites elucidate
All my own striving can’t relate

That clearly gives us phi to seven decimal places, which is 1.6180339. It could be argued that it doesn’t quite work correctly, since the number of letters in ‘strawberry’ is ten rather than zero! Having said that, dialling 0 on an old-fashioned telephone produced ten pulses, not none.

Re: Calculating square roots by hand

I authored that one myself yesterday.

Re: Calculating square roots by hand

I also authored this one but, well, here it is.

An interesting variant of the traditional penny-farthing, but wouldn’t the calyx of the strawberry prevent smooth rotation of the ‘penny’ wheel?

I thought that at first.

But is the green fixed decoration on the frame that only lines up with the red once every revolution of the large wheel and is only stood like that for the publicity painting to be made?

Or maybe someone has parked a penny farthing in front of a billboard advertisement for fruit.

Though the transcript has the following, so no.

[WJGO]
Please produce an original landscape impressionist painting.
A large strawberry and a blueberry, as if the wheels of a Penny Farthing bicycle.

[Copilot]
Your whimsical fruity Penny Farthing is rolling onto the canvas now, William—think Claude Monet meets a jam jar on wheels. [redacted strawberry] [redacted blueberry] Let’s see where the path leads!
