Topic: What are the chances?

This is the second time I've managed this. Should I buy a lottery ticket?:)

Re: What are the chances?

Doing that just once is quite a feat in itself, Geoff! Doing it twice, even over a large number of games, is a record to be proud of, but I don’t know how to calculate the probability of doing it twice and winning the lottery! Did you use a different word the first time around?

Anyway, I used up nearly all of my guesses when playing the official NYT version of the game this morning, so I don’t think I’m particularly well placed to advise you. Having said that, WordleBot seemed favo(u)rably impressed:

This kind of comment always annoys me a little:

WordleBot wrote:

Unfortunately, XXXXX wasn’t the right answer this time. And you’ve narrowed it down to one possible solution.

It should say “Unfortunately, XXXXX wasn’t the right answer this time, but you’ve narrowed it down to one possible solution.”

Another irritating comment from WordleBot is

WordleBot wrote:

There was only one possible solution left — and this wasn’t it. (XXXXX is a valid guess, but it’s unlikely to be a solution based on what I’ve learned from playing Wordle.)

It should say “There was only one likely solution left”, not “There was only one possible solution left”.

So did I, but got it on number six, in a state of confusion!

I start with a different word each day, often picked at random from what I am reading.

I've never noticed Wordlebot. I'll have to try it some time.

My first guess wasn't all that wrong!

Re: What are the chances?

WordleBot fails again!

“There was only one possible solution left — and this wasn’t it. (XXXXX is a valid guess, but it’s unlikely to be a solution based on what I’ve learned from playing Wordle.) But there’s still only one solution remaining. You should solve the puzzle on your next turn.”

My first guess today didn’t include any correct letters, and the XXXXX above had the same last letter as that first guess, so although it was a valid word it wasn’t a valid guess for that stage of the game.

Today's NYT Wordle seems to have upset a lot of people! https://avast.1news.io/news/106278dad22 … medium=ntp
My first two guesses gave me no clues, but I did get the correct answer (myrrh) on my sixth guess.

The “Detailed Summary” is followed by a link to the original article. Both state that “myrrh” contains no vowels, which is clearly nonsense since (as in so many English words) the “y” functions as a vowel here. Anyone who knows anything about ancient mariners should be able to tell you that “rhyme” has just as many vowels as “rime” does.

My first guess had no correct letters. My second guess was ROUST, which not only told me there was at least one “r” elsewhere in the word but also that there was no “o” and no “t”, so when I overlooked that for my fourth guess WordleBot rewarded me with a skill score of 0. I solved the puzzle on my next turn.

The original article on kotaku.com also stated that myrrh was one of the things given to Jesus when he died, when in fact it was one of the gifts — along with gold and frankincense — that were given to him by the Magi (the “three kings of Orient”) shortly after he was born.

Re: What are the chances?

Myrrh is/was also used in the embalming process, so most likely he got it on his death as well.

Re: What are the chances?

Thanks, Ali! I’m not sure I would say it was “given” to him when it was used as part of the burial preparations, but myrrh was clearly involved at the end of Jesus’ life as well as the beginning.

Quite so! "Y" is commonly used as a vowel, not only in "rhyme" and "Egypt" but at the end of most (probably) adverbs, such as those used by both of us in this post! However, it is, I believe, the only letter used as both a vowel and a consonant in English. My slight knowledge of Welsh suggests that both "y" and "w" are used as vowels in that language.

My slight knowledge of Welsh told me that “cwm” is a valley, where the “w” sounds like a short version of the “oo” in “room”. Looking it up on the Interwebs, I’ve discovered that cwm is a deep narrow valley whilst dyffryn is a broad flat valley.

I spent a few very happy months in South Wales during the Doodlebug era, and had several good Welsh friends when I lived in Bristol doing an apprenticeship, so became very fond of the country. But never learnt the language.

Anywhere in the UK you’d have to avoid broadcast political news coverage like the proverbial plague in order not to have heard that ‘Plaid Cymru’ (the Welsh nationalist party that was founded 100 years ago) is pronounced ‘plied kumri’, not ‘played kimru’ or ‘plad kimru’.

On a related note, I’m not sure when or why the Scottish Nationalist Party renamed themselves as the Scottish National Party.

I’ve just listened to the word dyffryn on Google Translate. It sounded more like ‘duff-RIN’ than the ‘DUFF-run’ that I expected (i.e. not only a different stress pattern, but also ‘rin’ rather than ‘run’ for the second syllable).

Re: What are the chances?

I believe it is the general rule in Welsh for the emphasis to be on the second syllable. For instance the name Meredith is pronounced Mer-RED-ith, not MERRY-dith. So Google may be correct in that emphasis. But yes, I would think "run" rather than "rin". But my knowledge is very limited. Is there no Welsh speaker on this forum? Perhaps William Overington! He was learning Welsh.

William last posted here two months ago (exactly two months ago yesterday, as it happens) and I replied to that post the very same evening. That was on a Tuesday, and I can see that he visited again on the following Saturday morning but he didn’t post a response.

The only forum member whom I know for certain to be a Welsh speaker has never actually made any posts here!
