Good one, Alfred.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Dreadful move on Serif's part. Thanks for creating this section!

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

But Serif aren't Serif any more are they?  I recall a post about them being taken over by an Aussie firm but I cannot find it.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Found it now https://punster.me/serif/viewtopic.php?id=612

And I still haven't noticed any mention of Affinity on the Canva website.

Serif still exists as a business entity, but they’ve been wholly owned by Canva since the acquisition a year and a half ago.

I agree, Ali, and you’re welcome! Speaking of welcome, I welcome members’ thoughts on extending and/or refining this section of the forums.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

I always thought that Serif's sub-divisions on the soon-to-close Affinity forum was odd. I would prefer to see it by product:

Affinity Designer (all platforms, but members to state which platform they are using)
Affinity Photo (all platforms, but members to state which platform they are using)
Affinity Publisher (all platforms, but members to state which platform they are using)
Affinity General & Cross-product

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Thanks, Ali. I think the rationale behind their subdivisions is that a great deal of the functionality is ‘cross-product’. The UI for the iPad apps is obviously very different, but apart from the artboards in Designer, the single canvas (with no pasteboard) in Photo and the pages in Publisher, the apps have so much in common that dividing issues by product is often rather arbitrary, and your suggested ‘General & Cross-product’ section is quite likely to end up being used much more than the app-specific sections.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Yes, probably.

Just been looking at the forums and Discord - speculation is (inevitably) rife and frenzy is being whipped up. I am not surprised given the way that Canva seem to be handling whatever this 30 October reveal is. I'm still hopeful that it will be a V3 that has some of the missing functionality that's been asked for and lots of bug fixes, but we shall have to wait and see. I'm certainly not going to be getting my knickers in a twist fretting about all the awful things that might be about to happen, least of all the prospect of a subscription model. The die is cast - we can do nothing to change anything. We've all felt this sense of powerlessness before with Serif, so there is some trepidation. All will be revealed in due course. Meanwhile, I hope that Serif is genuinely excited and happy at the prospect.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

I think that one needs to ask 'What does a user with a problem want when they go to a forum?'
They are agitated enough by the problem and may have bald patches or no hair at all.
I have been on many forums where it is impossible to find the right section without lots of searching through, only to find no answer and give up and go back to pulling out the remaining strands.
So I think clear signposting on the landing page is important - rather like what is now fast disappearing - a department store. Gentlemen’s floor One - they only need a small section of one floor for all their needs it seems. Ladies: Floor Two lingerie, Floor Three Shoes etc.

I like Ali's suggestion, but agree with Alfred about the General and Cross Product 'floor' - why bother having three distinct floors if all the buckets and mops are mixed with the beds and sofa's, shoes, make-up and perfume, cat litter and dog treats on the Ground Floor, or even the Basement.

Affinity Publisher, for example. could have sections, perhaps:

AF PUB-
           |_Mac OS
           |_Ipad
           |_Windows

and the same format for the other applications, so with a couple of clicks one would find oneself on the right floor with a list of the current queries, a quick scroll or search (limited to that floor only) would soon have you reading an answer, or in the absence of such, formulating ones own cry for help.

That's my sixpence worth, or should that be 'tanners worth', anyway.

A small edit.

Alfred is too much of a gentleman to mention it I am sure, so to avoid all the throat-clearing, tie-straightening and shoe-shuffling
and general prevaricating and beating-about-the-bush, may I suggest a discreet 'Donate' button to help with the defraying of costs that are likely to accrue with this additional rise in traffic and administration? I know, I know, but it had to be broached, forget I mentioned it, but there it is.

Thank you for the suggestion, but there are currently no additional costs arising out of the installation and running of this forum on my web space. If traffic and/or storage needs increase to the point where I need to switch to a more expensive hosting package, I shall of course review the situation.

Welcome, Maarten!

[edit] Ej Cool Alfred, even uploaded my avatar smile

I like to pick up an avatar if it’s readily available. The user is always free to change it!

About this forum I agree with previous posts. I think that a Share your Work channel here would also be nice to see each others work like on the 'old' forum.

Nice maybe, but this would exponentially increase the amount of storage required and would incur extra costs for Alfred, so I think it might not be possible. If the forum remains mainly text-based, it'll remain relatively cheap to run.

Thanks for your concern, Ali, but ‘Share your Work’ uploads are typically images. The limit for anonymous uploads to postimage is a generous 32MB and 10K by 10K pixels, the main disadvantages being that hotlinked images are downscaled to 1280px and, as you might expect, the ‘free’ service is supported by advertising. For other files such as native Affinity files or PDFs, many of us have Dropbox, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive storage space that we can use.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

I signed up on Discord to see what it was like, and what I saw was a constant avalanche of messages.

It might be a good place to communicate live, but it's definitely not the place to ask for help with software.

There are so many messages coming in that any questions that don't get an immediate response disappear into the depths of the channel, making them very difficult, if not impossible, to find again.

Serif's decision is a disaster.

Exactly so. It’s a chatroom, not a forum, making it quite unsuitable for user-to-user support.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

My 2 cents: Discord absolutely is not a substitute for a product support forum, & from what has been said by the staff somewhere in one of the now huge topics about the transition it is not intended to be.

There is now just the form for that, which of course is not a good substitute for a community driven, user-to-user forum.

Just think about the definitions of "forum" & "community" it should be obvious why user interaction is a necessary part of this.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Hello Alfred,

Great idea to extend this forum for Affinity users too. I agree with Ali about the structure of the Affinity section.

Does this mean that when we are stuck, we can post our problem here too?

Thank you again, Alfred. What you are doing is much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Chris

That’s the general idea, Chris! As @R C-R has observed, Discord is not a substitute for a product support forum. With the official Affinity forums due to become read-only in little more than 48 hours, I thought it made every sense to add unofficial Affinity forums here.

Re: Affinity Support is moving to Discord

Just curious but is there any way to add a like, thumbs up, or similar reaction to someone's post? I would do that to @Alfred just wrote if there is.

And how to get that @ link to a reply like he did above when mentioning me.

I’m afraid not. This is a deliberately lightweight forum, so there aren’t any “reputation” features. If you want to indicate a positive or negative reaction to a post, you have to include it in a reply: you can do that with one of the many smilies accessed via the links in the main navigation bar.

The link is to your profile page, not to a reply. The username above your avatar is hyperlinked to that page, so I picked it up from there.
