Please produce a painting of a cylindrical plant container with an added very flat prominent front panel that is moulded as an additional part of the plant container, with a reproduction of an original painting in the style of Claude Monet of a pink waterlily in flower upon that front panel. On the side of the plant container, a line drawn circle as a placeholder logo, the Placeholder branding and details of the painting. The container a dull white. There is a Monstera Delicosa plant with green foliage that is in a red plastic pot. The red plastic pot is placed in the container. An oblique view with the plant container on a plain wooden table. The fictional Placeholder branding and its plain line drawn circle logo so as to respect the intelletual property rights of the real software company.

Regardless of one's views of AI generated art, does the title of this thread have the  format of an oxymoron?

Well, please consider the following picture, requested to be painted in the style of Claude Monet..

That picture is original.

The works of Monet are out of copyright, so it is not stealing.

The picture was requested as an experiment so as to observe whether the AI system would produce a picture that is fantasy.

Setting aside the fact that you could probably have specified “flat” instead of “very flat” and still obtained much the same result, it doesn’t look flat to me anyway! Perhaps it’s an optical illusion, but it seems to follow the curvature of the cylinder.

So what work are both of you claiming was stolen to produce this picture that was requested to be produced in the style of Claude Monet?

Regardless of how derivative they are, the pieces are original in the sense that the elements have never before been put together in that form. Whether those pieces deserve to be called “art” is somewhat controversial.

All of the pixels are stolen because of the way that AI learns. More importantly, NONE of the pixels are yours. It might satisfy you to churn out this stuff, but it certainly doesn't make you an artist. It doesn't make AI an artist, either.

It's a bit like Eric Morecambe when he said "I was playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order."

Re: Original pictures generated by Bing Chat AI and later by Copilot

For the avoidance of doubt I have never purported that I am the artist of any picture that has been produced by an AI system as a result.of my text prompt.

I state that I authored the prompt, which is true.

Re: Original pictures generated by Bing Chat AI and later by Copilot

The issue was whether or not the art is original. As there is no artist involved, then it cannot be considered as art. That's my point. You may choose to think otherwise, but you won't persuade me that these are works of art.

Re: Original pictures generated by Bing Chat AI and later by Copilot

I am asking what you are both claiming has been stolen.

As I see it, the issue is whether the piece (however derivative it may be) deserves to be called ‘art’. Everything ever written uses letters and words which — with the exception of neologisms — have been used before, but they’re put together in different ways. Likewise, everything ever painted uses materials that a true artist could use, but imitating the style of, say, Monet or Manet or Picasso or Pissarro doesn’t put the work on a par with that of the masters.

I’ve made no such claim here.

It is a machine-generated picture. No artist, no artistic talent required. That's my opinion, to which I am entitled, and it is different to yours.

I am not going to be drawn on this any further: you must accept that my opinion differs to yours and I don't need to prove anything to you in order to validate my opinion any more than you need to validate yours for me.

My opinion: this is not a work of art.
Your opinion: this is a work of art.

Indeed. It was JAmedia and Ali who used the word "stolen".

Yet neither has stated what, exactly, precisely, they are claiming has been stolen.

Thank you for explaining.

Re: Original pictures generated by Bing Chat AI and later by Copilot

So perhaps

Original artwork

rather than

Original art

?

Yes, that would be better.
