Topic: "Build you own Website" services

Hello all,

I'm just looking into making a simple website for my partner's new venture and was wondering about people's experience of the "Build your own website" services such as Wix, Squarespace etc. I see even Canva have their own version now...

I used Wix many years ago and thought it was... ok.

Thanks for your time.

Re: "Build you own Website" services

I prefer to have more control. When I stopped using WebPlus X8 almost a year ago, I switched to WYSIWYG Web Builder (which is now at version 20). It's a one-man outfit: support via the forum is fantastic. Bit of a learning curve, but it didn't take me long to get my website up and running.

Re: "Build you own Website" services

If you want "simple," then probably any of the various services you mentioned will do.  I think I used Wix to build a site for a client a couple years ago.

But if you want more flexibility and control, DIY is the best option.

I don't know the best software to use anymore.  I'm basically back to using a text editor and uploading to a demo site for testing.  Way back when, the absolute best WYSIWYG web development software was GoLive CyberStudio.  I gave that a try over a weekend and bought it that same weekend without waiting the full 30 day demo period.  It was awesome.

Then, ugh, Adobe . . .

Adobe bought it, changed it to just Adobe GoLive and then killed it off in favor of Dreamweaver.  I used Dreamweaver CS3 for a long time--technically, still do use it occasionally.

But GoLive CyberStudio, yeah.  So good that Adobe had to buy it and kill it to eliminate the competition.

Some one-man outfits do a very impressive job. Besides WYSIWIG Web Builder, VectorStyler and FontCreator spring to mind, but there are a few others I’ve used or at least heard of (and probably many others I haven’t).

Thanks everyone.

It looks like WYSIWYG Web Builder I would have to arrange the web hosting etc which I don't know how to do! So I might stick with Wix or variant for now.

Yes, you would. It's not hard, but if you prefer not to, stick with Wix or SquareSpace.

Welcome, Craig! Thanks for joining us here.

Internet service providers typically provide a small amount of hosting space as part of their Internet and email packages, but that’s generally intended for personal use and therefore may not be suitable for your partner’s business venture. Will the site include an online store, or will it simply provide an online presence with information and perhaps a contact form?
