Topic: Layout Studio : Picture Frame problem on Win 11 Home

Hello All

I wonder if anyone can guide me on the following please. I want/need to get affinity.studio working on a particular Win 11 Home PC but have a problem with Picture Frame behaviour I've been unable to solve so far.

In summary, images can be placed in Picture Frames, but if you come back and try to change the PF's settings, the image drops one level in the layers stack (taking the focus with it of course) and you find yourself acting on the underlying image, not via the PF's zoom and positioning controls. A short video to show this can be found here:-

I have test-installed affinity.studio on two other Win 11 Home machines, both of which work perfectly in this respect, so something is clearly up with this particular PC. I've tried all the non-invasive things I can think of (such as preventing auto-loaded programs from starting).

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I've been around Serif PagePlus and Publisher for a (very) long time, so I'm not entirely clueless, but this has me stumped! I've reported the issue to Canva but heard nothing so far.

Welcome, Mike! Thanks for joining my merry little band.

I’m sorry I don’t have any suggestions to help you solve the problem that you’ve described. I currently only have access to a Win 10 Pro laptop, and I’ve never used any flavour of Win 11.

Without mentioning the software AI responds with:

The behavior where placing an image in a picture frame causes it to drop a level in the layers stack when you change the frame's settings is characteristic of a specific bug or non-intuitive interaction within the Affinity suite of design software, particularly Affinity Publisher. This is not a standard feature across all design software but a known issue in that particular application's layer panel logic.

The issue stems from the way the software handles drag-and-drop operations within the layers panel, sometimes interpreting a reordering action as an instruction to nest the object incorrectly within another frame. The expected behavior is for the frame's stacking order to change, not for the contained image to be repositioned in the hierarchy.

Workarounds for this behavior in Affinity software

Users experiencing this issue can employ the following workarounds:

Use the Arrange Commands: Instead of dragging and dropping layers in the Layers panel, use the application menu's arrange commands (Layer > Arrange and their respective keyboard shortcuts, such as Bring Forward or Send Backward). These commands are generally immune to this specific bug.

Adjust settings before adding content: Create the picture frame, adjust all its desired settings, and only then drag the photo into the frame.

Use the content thumbnail: Drag the image layer onto the content thumbnail of the frame layer in the Layers panel, ensuring it is correctly adopted as the frame's content and not just nested below it.

Detach and re-place: If an image is already in the frame and causing issues, detach the current image, bring the empty frame to the desired layer position, then drag the photo back in.

Understanding the distinction between selecting the frame (using the Selection tool) and the image content inside the frame (using the Content Grabber or Direct Selection tool) is crucial to managing image placement and transformations correctly within these applications.

Re: Layout Studio : Picture Frame problem on Win 11 Home

I'm not finding an issue with this in my Windows 11 system running Affinity v3.0.2

Having put an image in a picture frame, you are creating a group of two layers - the image layer  beneath the picture frame layer.
When I single-click on the image, I get the picture frame controls to adjust the size/position.
When I double-click on the image, that selects its layer and can use that to move the whole image around to reposition it within the picture frame. That's the same as using the slider control beneath the picture frame.

Does that help?

The problem is clearly peculiar to one particular setup.

If the mouse button is misbehaving, that should be easily verifiable by swapping with the mouse on one of the other machines. Anything related to drivers would obviously require more invasive measures.
