Topic: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Hello everyone,

For anyone interested in creating crosswords, word searches, and other activity content, Elaine Giles is hosting a YouTube webinar tomorrow, Sunday 8 February 2026, at 3 PM (UK time).

Elaine explains her process clearly and in great detail. If you’d like to improve your skills or learn new techniques, this is a great opportunity.

Here is the link to join:

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

You are welcome Alfred,

Next Sunday there will be another great webinar about "Working with Images".

I am looking forward to it because I learn a lot from Elaine her webinars.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

By the way Alfred,

Your forum is rapidly becoming a great fountain of information. Much better and more professional than Discord.

I am happy you keep your forums very clean, without all the noise as on Discord.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Thank you, Chris. I’m always glad to see you here.

For what little it’s worth, I’ve never understood Serif’s Canva’s decision to use Discord for customer support. From what I’ve read, it’s primarily designed for gamers to chat to each other.

To be fair, Serif didn't make that decision. The Discord server has been set up by Canva.

The General Chat is not conducive to giving and receiving help, but the threaded resource and Ask the Community sections seem to work well enough. It's not the same as a forum, but my mindset is to try to make the best of what is there.

You’re right, as usual! Since Serif is owned by Canva but seems to be semiautonomous, I find it hard to avoid conflating the two entities.

Thanks for the tip, Ali. I shall try to bear it in mind if I ever get past my aversion to the idea of using that particular platform.

Absolutely right, Ali. The Discord General Chat is a mess and suffers from people throwing in comments, in amidst other people starting new conversations (or rants), as well as questions that would be more appropriate to the Ask the Community section. I tend to skim the General Chat and pay more attention to the Learning & Resources and Ask the Community sections. I remain impressed by your patience as you repeatedly advise people who have a complaint to use the feedback processes. wink

Agree wholeheartedly with Bad Wolf's view. Elaine Giles' tutorials cover so much ground, explaining things clearly and taking the time to do so. While you might not think you want to produce "fun & games" puzzles in Affinity, or photobooks, or church newsletters (all recent subjects), the fact of the matter is that each session contains so many hints and advice on how best to utilise Affinity tools that all the videos are very worth watching.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

It was one of Elaine Giles' lengthy Publisher videos from years ago that finally scraped the scales from my eyes with regard to that program. Giles and Miss Grundy, my old High School typing teacher, have my enduring gratitude.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Thank you all for your interesting replies. Elaine Giles is indeed an excellent teacher and what she teach can be applied in our daily design work.

I suggest, everyone starting with Affinity, should watch her live/replay tutorials. By doing so, you put a very strong foundation on using Affinity.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

I've subscribed to her channel - looks quite good.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Very good idea Ali, it is a very educational channel. Always something new to learn. At the end of each live tutorial is a Q&A section where Elaine is answering questions from members.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Hello everyone,

For those who attended last Sunday’s webinar about working with images, what was your experience? What did you learn? Any opinions or ideas you’d like to share?

Next Sunday, Elaine will be covering master pages, and knowing her previous tutorials, I expect she will go through it very thoroughly.

Kind regards,
Chris

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

In the Working With Images session, I particularly liked the section on creating a Table of Illustrations as a separate entity from a Table of Contents (chapters). I had more or less worked out how to do this, but Elaine's session gave me some validation that I was doing the right thing and some useful pointers, which I've elaborated on.

The advanced custom picture frames section was also very useful, together with the demonstration of using Pinning.

As usual, Elaine's videos cover such a wide area of tips and tricks on how best to use Affinity.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Thank you, AdmiralP, for your reply.

I found the explanation of the wrapping options very interesting and learned a lot from it. I didn’t know that a Table of Illustrations was possible, so that was something new for me as well.

I really enjoy Elaine’s webinars because they are detailed and clearly explained.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Elaine is a very good teacher - I like her style (it's very similar to my own - I was a teacher for over thirty years and Head of Department for ten of them). The pace is just right - you can work along with her easily if you have a dual monitor set-up - and she breaks everything down into very clearly defined steps. It's all very well thought out - she'd get 10/10 from me for her lesson planning!

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

@Ali - couldn't agree with you more. Elaine's sessions cover so much and in so much detail and are well-paced. The summaries posted don't do the content justice, as you might think you understand how a particular tool is used, but Elaibe goes further and unpicks the nuances of how to use a tool most effectively. As you say, the sessions are so well constructed and bring a number of techniques together you deliver a practical output that can be adapted to a user's project requirements.

You’re welcome, Chris. I’m very aware that these forums have members scattered across the globe, so I thought it worthwhile spending some minutes to look up a few time zones other than GMT and CET.

Re: Elaine Giles – YouTube Tutorials (Temporary Closed, watch the replays)

Last week, Elaine mentioned the sudden increase in viewers. We both did a great job!

It is important that truly educational channels like Elaine’s remain visible among all the noise on YouTube. That is why our support for her channel matters.

Kind regards,
Chris

I think there was more to it: I have been promoting her stuff, too.

I assumed that Chris meant his comment to be taken as tongue-in-cheek! It seems highly unlikely that a low-traffic site such as this one would prompt a significant boost in a YouTube channel’s viewing stats.
