Another "Garden" video - Eden Garden https://vimeo.com/74812556. Again I probably posted it a few years ago on the old Serif Forum.
Yes I have acually stopped listening and watching any news as it upsets me too much, plus I can't do anything about it !!
It's good be able to sit back and watch an easy going video with all these terrible crimes against humanity going on.

It's all computer modelled , with a few pics. Well worth viewing if you like engines.

Being a car mechanic since 1962 I have always been interested in all sorts of propulsion devices. When I was at tech school for my apprenticeship I designed a four stroke engine that the inlet and exhaust valves were operated by solenoids. The idea was to get rid of power wasted by the force needed to turn the camshaft that is impossible to turn by hand on a conventional engine, whether it would have used less power than the electrical power needed to work it I don't know, and of course at the time it was not possible to actually make it !. I was also involved in the last 5 years with an engine that had a variable compression ratio with pistons that had sprung loaded top crowns, although we tried really hard (and spent a lot of time on it and had it actually working) we decided that it probably wouldn't be suitable for a road going engine that would have to travel thousands of miles a year.
A good friend of mine was a mechanic on ships and I was aware at the enormous size of the huge engines after he sent me a picture of him standing on top of a diesel engines piston inside of a cylinder !
From 1968 to 2011 I was involved in competitive motorsport and had great success building my own race engines, I won approx 280 races and 2 British Championships.
I have been having a look at various "actually free" editing software and found this one that actually does what it says on the tin and without adding watermarks !

I found it easy to use and it will edit and export 4K.
Alfred wrote:Ouch! Not good news, Gordon, but at least you hadn’t already sold it and dispatched it to its new owner.
Good luck with your multicam shoot.
Thanks Alfred, multicam tomorrow, however I took a walk up to our local hop garden today to have a look at one of the workers putting the strings up for this years harvest. As is usual the latest Hi Tech equipment is used on this farm ! Regarding the camera on eBay I might just keep it as I would probably only get a couple of hundred quid if I was lucky !

I have a slight problem, I put one of my older camcorders up for auction on eBay , however I was using one of my newer ones on a tripod a couple of days ago when the wind blew it over and damaged it !!. I have to do a multicam shot for someone at the weekend so I have had to withdraw it.

I decided to have another go at it and this is the result, I hope you like it.
I like that Albert, that's the best time to catch Sheffield park with all the colours fighting each other to be filmed. Love the music that fits it and obviously given the whole video a bit of thought, well done.
I am actually selling one of my Panasonic camcorders a HDC TM900 with all the parts, a brilliant auto/fully manual camcorder that incorporates a 32GB hard drive as well as an SD slot. I have it on eBay on offer as having 5 camcorders I think is a bit OTT even for multi cam shots !
UPDATE
I eventually sold the TM900 after a time on eBay but only got £90 for it, however somebody got a bargain and it was just taking up space. I had had it for at least 10 years and it had served me well.
I carry this fold flat device about in my pocket for filming things that are low on the ground using close up filters on the camera if needs be, cheap as chips but very stable. The Z Flex tilt head mount is ideal for filming small plants/flowers/insects and of course as the screen on the camcorder can be turned horizontal you can frame/focus the shot easily. Obviously it can be used instead of a tripod if put on a suitable place.

I'll probably go over to windows 11, a week before windows 12 comes out.
Likewise, looks like we have another 3 years !
Just when I want to use the printer !
GB wrote:I still use XP on an old laptop. Like you, I don't use it for the internet, but I still use a few Qbasic programs that will not work on newer versions on Windows - unless anyone knows how!
Geoff
You can sometimes run a lot of old programs, if you dig deep into the installer there is a provision to run them from earlier versions of windows. I have managed to put one on to Win 10 that is 15 years old, however it's very hit and miss regarding 32 and 64 bit.
I only run my old laptop for one program in the workshop for diagnostics that I have to update as and when new models of cars are built, as it's a very substantial metal one that has had lots of abuse, like falling off the roof of a car a few times I am loath to buy a new all plastic one !
My really old laptop that I use in my workshop for vehicle problems for customers is still running on Windows XP, I never go on the internet with it and update any new programs with a flash drive.
ericlnz wrote:By now there are a few Win 11 users. Any here who can give their experience with Serif Plus products and this new OS. I'm particularly interested in:
Movie Plus X6
Page Plus X8
Photo Plus X5
Hmm I'm a bit reluctant to give it a try, I don't think that my laptops can use it after giving it a test.
I have two Asus computers that are both the same and I normally use the one that I put an SSD hardrive in for video.
Mainstream support for Windows 10 continued until Oct. 13, 2020, and extended support ends on Oct. 14, 2025. But both levels could well go beyond those dates, since previous OS versions have had their support end dates moved forward after service packs, so I think I'll give it a miss for a couple of years.
ericlnz wrote:Whilst I do agree I suppose that you could say that about lots of species of animals in zoos that are not in their enviroment ?
Reminds me of the video I made six years ago https://vimeo.com/143450885
Of technical interest - the bear is a full plate monochrome print that I still have and the PIP video clips at the start are from my 8mm "off the screen" captures.
I enjoyed that Eric, well done for a good easy film to follow. Looking at the Wallabies, where we live in the UK there was an Australian guy who had a few on his large premesis and sometimes when we were driving about we would encounter one that had got out ! We are used to lots of deer around the area but to suddenly be confronted by one of these in the road (especially at night) was a bit of a shock !
ericlnz wrote:Yes well taken but very sad. Snow Leopards belong on the mountains in their natural environment not in a cage in UK. Surely a "Wildlife Oasis" should be providing a better environment?
Whilst I do agree I suppose that you could say that about lots of species of animals in zoos that are not in their environment ?
At least "most" are fed and looked after as much as possible and we have the RSPCA that do tend to keep an eye on them. What I don't particualy like are people that keep things like snakes and lizards and caged birds in totaly unsuitable places like small flats, no doubt some people do look after them but there are a certain type that just buy them as a fashion accessory !
Albert Ross wrote:Just finished watching this video, it was uploaded by one of my You Tube chums who lives up north. Most of her videos are pretty good, but this one was, in my opinion, exceptional. It was shot in Cumbria at the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis.
Sit back and enjoy 6 minutes and 41 seconds of fantastic footage. I hope I have not built this up too much!!

I really liked that, good content and music to match it as well, I think that I have seen another film by the same person via a link from a while back last year.

As for projectors one of our members keeps his Elmo GS1200 going but he has managed to get his hand on many spares. Plus he has a workshop and equipment and as a retired sewing machine repairer understands machinery. With any old equipment nowadays it's the situation with spares that's the potential problem. But having said that it's amazing what you can find on searching the net.
I still have my Elmo 600m 2 track projector that I dug out of the "deluge" in the attic a couple of years ago and found that it needed a bulb and new drive bands, I found the correct parts on the internet and got it all working again. Some of my older films have started to "de laminate" the thin balance track but as most are only music I can redo in post and substitute most other sounds easily in this day and age.
I had a couple of S8 sound cameras that I actually sold to people in the USA a few years back as there are/were a few fans that are still using actual film ! I understand that they can still find the film but are processed in B&W.
ericlnz wrote:Actually all my transfers were done projecting onto a small screen and capturing with a SD tape camera. The quality varies depending on the quality of the original. My early Std 8 with a Sankyo 8CM camera are my best. Later Super 8 with several cameras including a Canon 814 were never quite as good.
If I redid them all I could probably improve my captures but I've only one Eumig projector now and it's not working properly. Fortunately when I did my movies, which had the audio on stripe, I still had my original soundtracks on tape reels and still had my Akai tapedeck. It's now about 16 years since I did them all.
Apart from some early 8mm films that were made on a clockwork non focusing job most of my films were made on various S8 sound fully adjustable/focusing cameras and projected with an Elmo stereo projector that I still have along with an Akai reel to reel for the stereo soundtracks and both still work OK.
I had some quite good results projecting them onto a mid grey cardboard screen that I found was better than a pure white one as it didn't show a picture with too much contrast and white glare, and filmed them with one of my camcorders.
The problem is that I have about 20 years of films with some of them being 30/40 minutes long and I cant see myself getting around to actually doing them. I have just realized that there is a picture of me on the lookout tower on the set of Treasure Island back in the 70s that seems to be in the wrong place ?
ericlnz wrote:My recent visit to Muriwai Beach was probably the first time since 50 years ago when my Movie Club made this short film https://vimeo.com/50802981. I've probably posted it before. It's a Standard 8 film transfer so the quality isn't the best.
Well it's certainly "different" to say the least and it looks like the start of a Monty Python film ! I also thought it was going to be a remake of Treasure Island !
Incidentally one of our local beaches in Spain was used in 1972 for a remake starring Orson Welles and the set was left there for us to pretend that we were film stars, it's now a restaurant that is only open in the summer and is along a 2 mile dirt track.
Regarding the transfer it's not too bad and I think it must have been done on a proper transfer machine rather than with a projector and camera ? I have tried that but with "iffy"results.
I did actually think about buying one of those machines that copies 8 and S8 film frame by frame and transfers it to an SD card as I have a lot that I took in the 60s & 70s. Obviously it takes a long time to even do a 50ft reel but as it can run itself I suppose it doesn't matter (until a splice breaks) !!
Very often when I am out I sometimes want to take a shot of us walking for my videos, I know that you can simply place the camera on the ground or a wall but very often there isn't a suitable place that is secure enough to fix it.
I have looked at several of the mini tripods in the past and decided to get a Ulanzi MT33 that cost a massive £18! It claims that it will hold up to 2Kg, you can fit it to almost anything that the legs will fit round and will hang upside down as well as free standing. It has a ball head that will swivel to 90deg also a cold shoe mount and a built in phone mount ! It is very well made and if you zoom into the picture that I took that is holding one of my camcorders you can see the quality.
The ones that are made up of clip together plastic balls that hold that sort of weight are a fortune to buy in comparison and very often fall apart after a short time. Last of all it will go in a pocket. This is a picture I took of one of my camcorders on the flexible mount.

Yes MVP contained some useful tricks which I've not found in other consumer software. For example audio buses (groups), the ability to set animation keyframes relative to start or end plus other situations, animation of audio FX at clip, track and bus level.
But other software has its own useful tricks. I still have MVPX6 installed and working but nowadays use Vegas Movie Studio 17 Platinum. Sadly it's now a discontinued product as the developers are concentrating on Vegas Pro. What I like about more modern software is their dark interface.
Yes exactly, what I really like is that it's not a "cluttered" interface full up with stuff that you would only use once in a blue moon (if ever)
