No, this is not a genteel forum, as brought to mind with maiden ladies taking their cream teas in a little thatched cottage near railway with an Emmet locomotive puffing away.

We must hope and try to attain a polite environment, which may have to accommodate some rough language as used by the majority of the modern population. There are not always polite synonyms for things which may jar on occasion, and asterisks are a means of avoiding total confrontation with those terms.

It is true that in the first joke I posted, I could have used a different term which would offend no-one. I apologise for that. However, if it became necessary to describe more accurately certain waste, one should not use the c or s word, with or without asterisks, but would you, William, be upset if one was to use in plain speech  fecal or excreta . Where do you stop with individual sensitivities.

They say the degree of civilisation goes with distance from, lets say, the sewers.  People who have looked after very young children by necessity become desensitised to human waste material, and spend more time nearer the sewers, if you get my drift.

So the limerick illustrates, by ending with an eye rhyme of 'Rome' and 'home', one if the many inconsistencies in the pronunciation of English words.

Is it funny, though - the intent of this thread?
Do we first need to examine the rational of every post, to see what is the quirk that makes us laugh? Is every post from your goodself to be coloured by reference to your language interests?

Let's get back to jokes only, or people won't bother to look at it!

If we don't actually laugh at it - it has no place here!

Punny Pete >Scarlett Overkill<

Took me a while to see it,  so you need to enlarge it.

Nice, though!

Re my first post in this thread:

Please let me start a thread for jokes.
I am sure humour will show its hoary head!
No example here, just a thread titling post

In the light of what you have said, I had another look at it. I now discern some truth in your assumption.

"Thread" and "head" do rhyme.
"Jokes" and "post" almost rhyme.

I could have written
:

Please, let me start a Jokes new thread
For humour with a hoary head
And new cartoons and verses funny
To keep our feelings always sunny

Mariposa?

More like Ranjit, I think (as an example).

What on earth are you on about mending socks?  The diversion from topic is yours!

We don't have to be genteel, just polite. . .

On reflection, I could have changed the word to "nonsense", and I expect other renderings of the same joke - it's quite an old joke - would use a milder word.

You will find that in my postings over the life of the Lounge, I never, or hardly ever, used an asterisked word. I too find them distasteful. (I except the use of a**, which is nonsense to a UK English speaker).

At the same time, while  I can understand your feelings, and sympathise with them, we live in a big wide world where nasty things are said. The use of asterisks is meant to diminish the impact of what some regard as obscenities.

You'll have to forgive me for these next comments. You appear to live in a world where women are named Jane, Edith and the like. In the world now, they are more likely to have more ethnic names. This makes me think that you may have an old-fashioned approach to language which colours your thinking. You are not wrong in this, just not quite prepared for this world.

Travelling to England from Rome
She booked a holiday home
In a woodland chalet
She practised her ballet
And learned to pronounce the word 'some'

I have some issues with this verse, unlike the second. This first  limerick seems to be a collection of phrases cobbled together, with only the middle three bearing any relationship with each other, and none with  the first and last lines. Also Why the word "some" - I work quite hard to find relevant rhymes.

Why not try: "Having tidied her hair with a comb", or even "And practised the dance Sugar Plum"

A word such as 'rubbish' could have been used instead.

I published the joke as I found it.  The man was really annoyed about what he thought he was trying to read, and c*** was what he felt and said.

The modern tendency is to publish the whole word, and I am sure, in this place posters would not resort to that.

This is no place for serious obscenity, but please live in the modern world. It is not genteel, but we don't have to go towards the use of words like darn, and consarn for damn.  Look at any collection of jokes from the US in the early  30's. Genteel is the word for those now unfunny jokes.

I do find sexual references uncomfortable, but there is a level of modern acceptance in the general public of some references to body functions, which every single one of us suffers.

I agree that there are many expressions, and Bowdlerised versions of them, which should not be published.

Ah, William, that's excellent in several respects. It rhymes, it scans and it nicely conveys the message.

You see what you can do when you're provoked.

Could you possibly consider changimg 'a translation' to 'some translations' please?
Then 'nation' could be changed to 'nations' because it is about communication through the language barrier.

No - I  like my limerick as it is.

The use of the word 'young' is kind.

It would have too rude to put "old"

You don't like it - here's a challenge - write your own poem, limerick, what have you - but make it rhyme and scan.

I notice you haven't commented on the previous post. . . .

Anyway, this thread is for jokes, even comic poems.

Doesn’t your browser’s ‘Back’ button bring you back here, Jack? It should do!

I'm confused now. It does work with those I have just tested. It didn't used to work.

I think it didn't work on attachments shown only as the link/description.

My problem is a very poor short term memory. I can't remember things I have just done.

Karen, yes it was a most enjoyable tour of the western states - taking in some of California, Arizona , Utah, Nevada, the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon  Not forgetting a couple of days in Las Vegas,  Mormon country, and Native American regions (or do we call them the First Peoples..

Then again, I did spend several months mid year in around 1971 in San Francisco working in an American company on a joint US/UK project. That was interesting. When one meets similar people at work and for some shared leisure, one gets to know a lot more than if one meets only hotel and restaurant staff.

It’s presented here at thumbnail size to keep the page dimensions down. Click on it for a larger view.

Then if I do a left click, as is normal, and by hard to break habit, the picture will display in a large size, from which page I can't recover - see earlier remarks.

There seems to be no reverse navigation - working backwards through the selection and display process

To summarise:

Without trying all  it looks as if we can upload and download several file types as attachments. Better than before

pageplus  .ppp files
Word       .doc files
picture     .png etc files

This is a test

works fine but I find I have to open PP app before clicking on file in download pane.

entered pageplus X9 file

so that's better then.

I looked up BBCode, and I can see that the content of the img,/img brackets has to be a url.
OK, so I can stop trying to get round that by posting an image in the body text - unless it's a url, anyway.

Now, I am going to try various sorts of files as attachments. If these work, that would be sufficient for most posters to have their readers open an attachment, especially if it was of some significance - not just of transitory humour.

Are there means to order the posts lists - latest/earliest, etc.?

349

(37 replies, posted in General Discussion)

After displaying an extension, I can get back to the posts if I click on Active Posts, it takes me back to the overall list page. Not good, but better than closing the site.

I cannot yet see how to post the odd graphic, diagram, etc. originating in the PC without great effort. This is very disappointing. We do need a means of posting one's own produced graphics.

When trying to load a graphic in the Preview Attachments /Choose file process, is the tag "not yet downloaded" (or equivalent) a key to a facilitating procedure?
