A good film Paul you were lucky to have gone on that trip. Looks like they might have put some Vaseline on the sides of the ship !
Sorry that I haven't been on here for a while, however when we came back from Spain I found that the weather back in the UK was appalling and wondered why we had bothered !
I was sitting at home and looking out of the window at the pouring rain and happened to look at the price of flights to Almeria back in early November and found a couple of return tickets for £35 each !! yes £35 !! so it was a no brainer. We flew down on the19th of November and will be back on the 14th Dec only to fly back down on the 31st.
I haven't been doing much in the video world but we are often going for what I call "a lost drive" in our area in Spain. This one starts up in the hills and mountains a few miles inland from our coastal home and finishes in Sorbas in the evening and shows a lot the amazing family run pottery that has to be seen to be believed !
One slight problem that I did have is I foolishly left my camera on 4K for all of the mountain scenery on the first part of the video and only realized it when we got to a small hamlet to film the tiny church.
As I haven't got any 4K editing software on this laptop that I use down here I had to convert it to 1080p to edit it, but it wasn't "that successful".
That's my excuse anyway !

Good catch. But if I remember right, I didn't flip it. I shot it in a mirror. It did give the "second" character a slightly different look and, it was easier to shoot it that way as space was limited.
I have always been a stickler for continuity in films and can normally pick things out that are altered or filmed at different times.
Some of the worse are car chase films that have a dent in one part that magically is repaired on the next shot !
The old clock on the wall was always a giveaway when a part was either a short or long scene and the clock didn't match up.
As you know peoples faces are not symmetrical, if you take a picture and cut it down the middle and flip one part and rejoin it, it can look like a separate person.

Very good Paul, I assumed you transposed the second "you" ?
I'm not sure what you mean by "transposed." I played both parts if that's what you mean.
Looking at the "second person" I thought that you had "flipped" the shot over in 2D in post so that your face was different, as certain marks on your face seemed to be reversed.

pberk wrote:Thanks Albert and Alfred for the kind comments. In my youth, I had a brief career as a filmmaker. Things were so much more difficult to do in those days. Film was expensive and therefore limited. Shooting required enough light. A simple "superimposition" of a title was an optical effect that required lab work. You needed an audio studio and a sound mixer. And a myriad of other things and people to do them. Now, with digital camera equipment, computers and video editors, it still amazes me how much one can in the way of filmmaking all by yourself. It is possible to be a one-man-band.
Here's an example:
Brothers .. 9 min
Sorry I have only just seen this, I would have loved to have made things like that, but I'm afraid that I am too long in the tooth to learn.
Obviously some good work with filming/editing and a good understanding of film language. The "Twins" film I enjoyed as well.
And as you say things are so easy with modern digital equipment compared with cutting and splicing 8mm film that was expensive and so time consuming, especially if you didn't get it right the first time and had to re-shoot scenes on a different day/lighting etc. Although I did use to break the ratchet on the S8 cassettes and rewind the film to add effects with double exposure, and before that I used to develop my own 8mm B&W film when I was at school. I had a friend whose father worked for Kodak who would give me small amounts of 16mm B&W film that he would splice down the middle and re-perf so I was lucky.
I am still an avid user of Movieplus X6 that still works perfectly on my laptops. I live in Spain for 5-6 months of the year and have the same software on the one I keep in Spain.
Luckily I kept my old computer when I first installed it that is still in the attic, along with the original installation disk and subsequently added them to various computers along the way.
I can use and render 2.7k footage with X6 and short bursts of 4K with proxy files, if I have lots of 4K I use the free download of the Viddly edit software to render it down and finish it in X6, also the green screen in Viddly is far superior. All of my videos on my YouTube (GStree) site are still made with it.
Why no one else has ever made a program like X6 I'll never know ?
This is one I made the other week https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvsYLE0BPLA
Well for the last six months I have been using a Panasonic HCX 2000 camcorder, I bought it on a bit of a whim while I was looking on line. I found one that was still in it's box actually unused and still in it's individual plastic coverings. It was up for auction on eBay and I put a silly low price in more to see the result than actually buy it, and much to my surprise I actually bought it for well under 1k !
It is a good bit of kit for what I paid and I really like it. It is not the camera that I use for my films of music groups/bands in Spain as it is bigger and heavier and not practical for the hand held shots that I use, also I travel really light on our frequent trips.

I suspect Alfred is querying whether you were born with your beard as how old are you now. 77?
I fully understood the question and said what I said jokingly, yes I am that age and still pretty fit so I count myself lucky. My father lived until 101 and was still gardening and mixing up cement when he was 100 !

Thanks Gordon. Looks like recycled teenagers having a good night out as I noticed one lady dancing clutching her phone!
The lady in question was actually the organizer of the whole event, she is one of those people that goes out of her way to help anyone who is genuinely having problems. She is also a trained physiotherapist who is a great help to us OAPs. This particular event had a quiz between the numbers being played and all the questions were on her phone.

ericlnz wrote:Thanks Gordon. Were they wearing the exact same clothes? Probably not as they probably wouldn't have been able to get into them? Even though your dancers are "wearing well" it's amazing how much slimmer most of us oldies were in our younger days.
We missed seeing you dancing in the crowd but then as camera operator you had an excuse.
You probably spotted me in the wide shots on the GoPro ?
Well this picture is a blow up of yours truly that I took off the wide angle GoPro that I run for the whole time when filming such things, and the only fake thing on me was the arm tattoos for effect on the day.
That is my own long undyed hair that hasn't gone white like my beard over the last 77 years, but I am not going to try and grow it as long as my wife's who hasn't been to a hairdressers since she was 15. However we do "trim" each others hair now and then.

Well it's a bit of a change back in the UK, one minute we are swimming in a 26c degree sea and enjoying high 30c temperatures and after 2hrs 30mins later on a plane it's 17c or less !!!
We won't be back until the new years day charity sea swim unfortunately.
At this moment I am editing up footage for a film that I am making that was for a local charity event in our area in Spain with a "Mods n Rockers" themed party that I hope to finish soon, as I have other work commitments to sort out first.
This is just one of the many numbers that the local band played to get the OAPS on their feet and put a bit of wear on their new knee and hip joints!
Some of the people dressed up in what they were wearing back in the day (including my wife) and most were over70 and wearing well! also the band put on a good show until well into the night.

Well hopefully if we are still here in this crazy world next year, we might be able to enjoy spring in the UK !
Sue and I used to fly or drive over to Holland for several years to have a look at the Tulips, and the amazing festivals that are put on in certain villages where the people make a complete amazing mosaic pictures and three dimensional things from tulips of faces/cars/houses or "anything" on their lawns/walls or on "anything"
We to have a Magnolia tree in our garden in the UK that is terrific when in bloom but unfortunately only lasts a short while, especially if it's windy
I enjoyed watching the video Eric with those colours as I am watching it in Spain where the weather is still very hot, and not too much on the floral side looking brilliant.
The bougainvillea seems to be the stable plant that is in most gardens and roses that grow all the year round as long as they get a drink now and then!
Filming wise I have only been making videos for local bands unfortunately, so although I do have every intention of driving into the campo on one of my "lost drives" to get some inspiration, the 40c plus temperatures that we have been having seemed to "quell" things down !
Heading back to the UK in a few days time to see how things are, although my weather app has shown "frosts" in our village.
Yes a quick interesting video Paul. Personally I don't like hurried up skimming from place to place trips, and prefer to make my own way (but that's just me). It always makes me smile for Nobel "dynamite" and "peace prize" in one sentence !
At this moment we are in Spain until the end of October and hoping to do some of my "lost drives" into the campo to find those little abandoned villages that have half a dozen people still living in them.
On the subject of rising sea levels, as we have been in the same place in Spain for 50 years I have pictures of the local landscape and beaches to look at "then and now" to notice the change over that period. Some of the beaches have completely disappeared from view and are just cliffs and sea.
ericlnz wrote:we live in a 500 year old oak beamed house that is a listed building so we are looking at history every day.
Gordon - A subject for an interesting video? You could include something about your local area which presumably also has history. Or perhaps you already have such a video?
Recent news items have mentioned the high temperatures in parts of Europe. I gather this includes Spain. Speaking to my brother in South London last Saturday he told me they have not had high temps.
I should really make a video of the area as it is often used for period films that are on general release and TV. Although I have made films of certain parts over the years for our village Facebook page I have never made a complete one.
I suppose that now I have more time on my hands in retirement I should do something ? The problem is that I am not too sure where to start, and after watching some of your films of your area I don't think that I could get near your standards?
Regarding the high temperatures I haven't noticed anything different to be honest both here and in Spain. We have been in Mojacar on and off for 50 years and at this time of the year it has always been up in the high 30s lower 40s ! Several years back some friends of ours asked if they could use our place in Spain but it would have to be August as it was in the school holidays. We said of course but warned them that it would be "very hot", their reply was "it has been raining for weeks and it's cold as well and we love the heat"
Anyway they went and I gave them a list of the best places to go to for eating and sightseeing. After they came back we asked them where they went and what did they think of the general area. The reply was "we didn't go anywhere as it was too hot and spent everyday in your swimming pool" !!!!

Cheers Eric I enjoyed that, being informative as well as being well filmed/edited.
I probably have said in the past that in the UK we live in a 500 year old oak beamed house that is a listed building so we are looking at history every day.
I had to chuckle when we were in the States many years back and were looking around inside a "historic" building. The majority of the other people that day were American and were all "OOOs & RRRs" when looking at the fittings and furniture. my wife whispered to me "it looks just like the inside of our house !

I am still running MoviePlus X6 and edited this little number with it that I filmed at one of my local pubs at the weekend.
I have known these guys for years in my area from various bands who always put on a good show. Have a listen through a decent sound system or headphones for best audio. I filmed this with a Panasonic camcorder and a GoPro with a Zoom audio recorder. It wasn't the best setup for the band as we kept having intermittent rain all evening.

Being an old Hippie aged 76 I still love this type of music that I filmed in a local beach bar down here in Spain the other week. All of the band have been friends of mine for quite a while.
Not the best video that I have made but I like it.

I've been having to sit around lately resting a leg, playing 50s and 60s music on CDs and reminiscing. It's over two years now since I made the move into my retirement village. A bigger change in lifestyle than I realised. A good move, so here from 2021 "On the Move". https://vimeo.com/513632928 I probably posted it on the old Serif forum
One of our walks from our house in the UK from our garden is solely across fields and the river to a small graveyard where my parents and lots of people that I grew up with are buried. It's only when I look at the ages of some of them that I realize I'm living on borrowed time !!!! It's quite well kept but unfortunately the local badgers love digging it up! I often sit for a while and reminiscing of those days from the early 50s when everything ran at a different pace and life seemed perfect for me growing up.
The "moving" film was very well filmed and I thought that I had seen it before? and of course I had on the old Serif forum as you said.
Just 3 minutes of wildlife taken in the evening sun off the big bridge in Mojacar. We were amazed at the number of Terrapins that appeared yesterday evening as only 3 or 4 normally show up. However we counted 15 ! I always love the Swamp hen with it's huge feet !

ericlnz wrote:Tell us more about the external power packs please. I've seen them mentioned but never come across them. Are they battery powered?
Yes they are basically a "battery" for charging a phone or anything else that will work via a USB connection and is a similar size to a mobile phone, also it will fit in my pocket.
This is the one that I use with the GoPro or the Panasonic 900 as they are 5 volt. However I would only ever use them with the battery in the camera and not a "dummy" and plugged into the camera charging socket so as to protect the onboard circuits. I have used them for about 3 years and never had a problem and you can get them that will charge at higher voltage and wattage but at a higher price.
Also of course it will charge your phone if needed !

9000000mAh Power Bank Fast Charger Battery Pack Portable 4 USB for Mobile Phone
ericlnz wrote:Yes technology has changed dramatically. The most expensive item nowadays is your cameras Li-ion battery.
My older Panasonic batteries for my old SD tape camera are lasting much better. They appear to be keeping their capacity better and keep their charge for long periods.
I only have genuine Canon and Panasonic batteries. I recall Albert Ross having a bad experience with alternatives.
Agreed with the above, however I use one of these external power packs to run my GoPro and my Panasonic HC VXF990 that will run for hours that cost peanuts (like £15). I normally use my GoPro on a tripod when using it for filming bands for the whole set so that I have a fixed overall wide shot to go back to when editing.
