I am puzzled by the fiddler. What has he got in his mouth and what does it do?
I’m glad I’m not the only one to wonder about that, Geoff!

More music from bamboo here (including a reprise of the Turkish March):
Instructor: "Welcome to salsa class! Who's ready to learn how to dance?"
Me, hiding tortilla chips bag: "There's been a misunderstanding."
Bamboozled me!
LOL.
Thanks for the link, Albert. I’ve never heard a version of the “Rondo alla Turca” sounding quite like that, but it works very well.
Thanks Alfred for your explanation. I didn't realise that the person on the right, standing in what appears to be a garden, is meant to be the devil.
That’s a fair point, Eric. He could have been a bit more — or a lot more! — red, and the grey stuff rising from the ground around him could have been more smoke-like.
PS The python reference was only to the expression "Say no more".
“Nudge, nudge! Wink, wink! A nod’s as good as a wink to a blind ’orse!!”
Oh dear, Eric! What does the Devil usually give things in exchange for? Change the last letter to a ‘p’ and you get ‘soup’!!
Met this guy in a pub who said only a genius can count 100 seconds accurately with their eyes closed. So I set my stopwatch on the table, closed my eyes and counted. When I opened my eyes he'd stolen my wallet and watch. Never did find out if I'm a genius or not.
Putin dies and goes to Hell, but after a while he is given a day off for good behaviour.
So he goes to Moscow, enters a bar, orders a drink, and asks the bartender:
-Is Crimea ours?
-Yes, it is.
-And the Donbas?
-Also ours.
-And Kyiv?
-We got that too.
Satisfied, Putin drinks, and then he says:
-Thanks, how much do I owe you?
-Five euros.
For question 4, I chose the example that uses the present continuous. I don’t understand why
the example that uses the simple past tense supposedly uses an ‘incorrect present tense’ verb.
The term ‘present perfect’ is unfamiliar to me, so I also slipped up on question 5.
Final score: 6/8.
Which ones left you puzzled, William?
Years ago I heard that the way music works is that Middle C is 256 Hertz.
Later I think it changed to A is 440 Hertz.
Please see: https://www.binauralbeatsmeditation.com … -frequency
So, does what Geoff wrote mean that, say, middle C is a different frequency on a clarinet than on a bassoon?
No, middle C is middle C (256 Hz or 261.62 Hz, or whatever).
A fourth and a fifth in music seemed to be different from a fourth and a fifth in mathematics, but maybe I was missing something.
The interval from middle C to the G above it (C-D-E-F-G) is a fifth; i.e. a sequence of five consecutive notes.
I don't know which instruments are being played here, but while you can play the same notes on say a clarinet, and a bassoon, the bassoon plays them in a lower register.
According to the Wikipedia article, the notes are played on an ARP 2500 (monophonic synthesizer).
Occlusion Grotesque is an experimental typeface that is carved into the bark of a tree.
Thank you.
You’re welcome.
What is a register please?
The term “register” as applied to music can refer to various things, but in the present context I’m essentially talking about pitch.
Listening again to the clip on the Wikipedia page, I find that I misspoke. I had asserted that “the entire sequence” is shifted to a lower register, but actually only the last two notes of the repeated phrase are at a lower pitch than the original; the first three are exactly the same as before.
I am puzzled as to why the audio file, when played, has two five note sequences, when the notation has five notes.
I am not very good at all with musical note identification but the sequences sound different from each other to me.
They sound different because they are! The first one is as written on the stave in the article; the intervals in the second one are the same, but the entire sequence is shifted to a lower register.
Alfred wrote:By the way, did you notice the typographical discrimination against Slovenia on the eurovision.tv page?
No.
In what way please?
William
The names next to most of the national flags are in 18px type, but the font size for the name next to the Slovenian flag is only 16px. Additionally, the performer and title (“LPS – Disko”) are not in bold type.
Alfred wrote:Why is Australia participating in the Eurovision Song Contest?
Because Australia is a member of the European Broadcasting Union.
I don't know why that is, but quite possibly so that they can get feeds of such things as the New Year's Day concert from Vienna, and possibly football matches and so on.
William
Thank you, William.
By the way, did you notice the typographical discrimination against Slovenia on the eurovision.tv page?
So can we have an Art category please?
Not "the arts", just Art please.
How about a Music section please?
I’m not sure about the desirability of having a large number of separate forums. There’s an ‘Art & Literature’ forum which currently has only fifteen topics in it, and I’m inclined to think that music topics would fit in nicely there.
What I cannot work out is whether I will be able to watch the Eurovision Song Contest this year on my computer without needing to watch via the BBC iPlayer.
I didn’t see any mention of BBC iPlayer on the linked page.
We’ll be first with exclusives on the rehearsals as they happen
Hmm. Not very exclusive if they’re only going to be first!

Why is Australia participating in the Eurovision Song Contest?
Could there be a History section please?
I’ve added a new section here: History & Geography
I never drink them chilled. I store them at ambient temperature and drink them at ambient temperature.
What if it’s wintertime and your heating has broken down? They may well be chilled if you store and drink them at ambient temperature!
I can drink coffee at any temperature but I prefer tea to be either moderately hot or ice cold. Milky beverages such as soya drink are more pleasant at either considerably above or a little below room temperature. Fruit juice and carbonated drinks are better consumed cold.
