Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

Alas, deleting the word polar resulted in pictures that I think are related to the word nephroid meaning kidney, and who can blame the AI if people have used a word with an established meaning for something else.

I suppose that Freeth's nephroid was not including in the AI's learning, so the same issues as with gibbous moon and Puffing Billy and the AI's web access facility not linked to its painting feature: something not a problem at all for a human.

[Here is a prompt that worked.]

Please produce an original colourful painting in the style of Renoir. At the left of the picture is a lady. At the right of the picture is a young man. The man is showing to the lady a picture of a dodo that he has painted. The lady is looking admiringly at the man.

Can readers try to work out anything about the prompt that I used that resulted in this picture please?

Rather delightfully, the AI has seemed to extend the prompt and produce the following picture, which is a quite amazing thing that it did that.

My guess is that your prompt included a reference to Vermeer. The window is like the one which is featured in both The Astronomer and The Geographer, and at least two of his paintings depict a lady playing a virginal.

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

Yes, Vermeer.

Here is the prompt that I used.

Please produce an original painting in the style of Vermeer. There is a room. One wall has a window. A woman is playing a harpsichord. An older woman is watching and listening. The older woman is her mother. She is proud of her daughter.

In the second picture that I posted, I wonder if the AI system has built on the idea of the proud mother and included a grandmother too.

Later, without a New Topic reset, I prompted as follows.

Please make all of the dresses blue.

I got four more pictures, with some of the dresses blue, yet not the same pictures, similar, yet not the same pictures with the colour of the dresses changed.

https://i.postimg.cc/D84Rf3Cm/2875a17a-cb32-426f-bea8-22de6a87b691.jpg

Though that is the fourth picture, whereas the earlier pictures were the third and fourth of the first set.

What I find fascinating about these AI pictures is the added details, such as the jug and the candlesticks that are on the top of the harpsichord, and the pictures on the wall.

Do some of the pictures include switches for ... er ... the not at the time invented electric lights?

Or maybe that is added so as to avoid claims of a forgery. I remember somebody made a beautiful reproduction of an old microscope, and in the brass body included a small bar magnet so that testing the microscope with a compass would immediately show that it was not the original but a reproduction.

Here is one of the pictures that has a different window.

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

Those are splendid.

AI has some wonderful detail.

Clicking on the picture once enlarges it, clicking that enlarged picture fills the screen with picture.

The floorboards have wood grain.

Yet sometimes the AI gets in a muddle. For example, the first of the pictures that the AI (which one?) produced for Alfred. There are pictures in the background that seem to be munged together in some way.

Is that a radiator beneath the window?

I wondered the same thing at first, William, but upon closer inspection it’s clearly upholstered.

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

So what is it then?

An upholstered radiator!

But the pictures are requested in the style of Vermeer, not as if they are styled with nothing newer than existed at the time of Vermeer in them.

So it as if it is a scene from a present day theatrical play presented in a set that looks like a room from the time of Vermeer.

So, like real life where some people decorate a room in their home in the style of William Morris, with wallpapers and the fabrics of chairs using his designs, yet having a radiator in the room.

And people dress up in the style of the Regency period and go to events.

I once saw a Victorian fair in Worcester where there was a sweet stall and the man in Victorian costume was putting sweets in a bag while wearing a plastic bag over his hand for modern hygiene.

LOL. I don’t think so! Anyway, regardless of what the ‘radiator’ is meant to be, the lampshade in the corner looks decidedly anachronistic.

Was he putting the sweets in a plastic bag or a paper one?

I hadn't noticed the lampshade!

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

An eight word prompt, the name redacted at present. Can anyone recognise who it is supposed to be?

Please produce an original painting of [Given name redacted] [Surname redacted].

Jane Austen.

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

Yes. Well done.

The prompt for the earlier picture was as follows.

Please produce an original painting of Jane Austen.

None of the four pictures seemed to me to look like her.

The prompt for the colourful picture was as follows.

Please produce an original painting of Jane Austen, based on the drawing of her by her sister that is in the National Portrait Gallery in London.

So this time, unlike for Puffing Billy, a gibbous moon, or Freeth's nephroid, the AI has drawn the real life subject that was requested. So was that from its prior training or from what it found on the web?

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

In this case it seems simply that you were more specific in your prompt.  Even Google search would have little trouble finding an image of Jane Austen as drawn by her sister.

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

William,

I notice that you invariably ask AI to produce an "original" picture. How do you suppose AI could produce a picture that is not original? Would that not have serious copyright problems?

Re: The modalities of using Bing Chat AI to produce art

If the AI produced a picture copied from one existing picture, or montaged from several existing pictures, that could, depending upon when the existing picture was produced, present copyright issues. Also, I am interested to see a new picture generated by the AI system, not merely a presentation of an existing work as if the AI is acting as a search engine.

At some time in my interactions with Bing Chat AI I asked about this and it claimed something like that it learns the style of a named artist and produces an original picture in that style.

I have noticed that for Bing Chat AI there appears to be a 4000 character limit to the prompt. The prompts that I have used thus far have been much shorter than that. I am wondering just how much detail of what one requests the AI will include.

I am reminded of the famous painting The Ambassadors.
