Hi Alfred,
Sorry been away so long and late in on this topic- extremely busy with my football club!
But, as you say: 'easier said than done'. Apart from PP product keys being scarce, does anyone really send PPP files by 'ordinary' email?
My 32-page PPP publications come out at around 65mb - crammed with articles, graphics and images; where I doubt I could email that size of file. Converting to PDF reduces the file to around 12mb which is easily emailed, so Bookworm's idea of giving his friend a copy of PP may not work anyway if the files are too large to email?
A while since anyone has commented on the buy-out of Serif by Canva, but the Cons (for me) keep mounting up.
Here's another: -
'Canva has many outages and often runs slow'
and/or: -
'Difficult to login - or takes an age to login'
A colleague has taken over one of my DTP projects, which I did on PagePlus X9. He has decided to go the Canva route, having not used any Serif software previously. He reported these issues to me, so I did an online Canva search yesterday and lo and behold these issues, among others, are being widely reported.
If one is leisurely producing a DTP project, no problem - but if one has print deadlines to meet then Canva might well prove to be unreliable.
Little late joining the conversation, but whenever something 'new' appears, before deciding to buy I seek out websites describing the Pros and Cons and to be honest I always go for the Cons first.
Cons for me are: -
* Firstly, and appears where everything is going these days, Canva is cloud-based software. This is a bother for me as I have always preferred and used stand-alone software that is bought or downloaded to run independently on my system - where also, all such as personal photos and videos are stored privately on my system - and 'not' the cloud.
* Reports are that the free Canva is limited and one will soon want to upgrade to paid features which are an expensive monthly option.
* It is, therefore, a subscription service.
* Comparisons on 'comparison websites' rated Serif software as 'superior' to Canva - so an obvious choice for Canva was to buy-out Serif.
* What you see on your screen with Canva - might be different to what is printed.
* Confusing interface.
* One comparison website said: difficult to use on tablets and mobiles.
AND, here's two troubling Cons (for me anyway): -
* Canva can delete your account at any time they wish.
* Intellectual Property remains with Canva.
The comment has been made, 'let's wait and see'., but for me: too many Cons...
It's a shame about linking as 'may be' the only way to go.
I did a 32-page A5 booklet once with all the images linked - the file with all the linked images got corrupted and I lost everything. I did my 32 page page publication again with all embedded, with a file size of around 100mb
ALNC - Question - what is the file size of your 40 pages?
How can I import a PDF file to my publication?
Must have done this over the years?
Thanks in anticipation, Sandy
Hi Vicki, Alfred,
I recall exchanging posts with you recently Alfred about MoviePlus X6 and the missing codecs.
In any event, I use to use MPX6 to convert formats, but obviously can't now.
A week or so back I mentioned that I could use AVI files to embed such in PPX9 for PDF playback, but not some other formats, but was keen anyway to convert some of my old AVI files. Well, I now find that I can use VLC Media Player to easily convert my old AVI files to MP4 format and feel now that I can move on just using VLC for such conversions. So, no need for MPX6 anymore for this process. Am I talking sense, in that VLC can do some things that MPX6 can no longer do?

I have spent some weeks on this, trying all different formats, but to no avail except minor success with an old AVI file. Below will be seen the HELP on PPX9, where so many video formats 'should' work, but don't.
I then looked up Affinity Publisher to see if I should take that route to get videos into my club newsletters - but NO, as a question was raised about this process to Serif, back in 2021 - where you will see below a Staff Member stated categorically that this was not a feature in Affinity Publisher. I think Serif has missed the boat on this one...
Thanks for that Alfred.
A few minutes ago I managed to get an old AVI file working, but not MP4 files?
I set it up with Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) - got the start/stop/pause Control Panel and Floating Window, etc. in pdf playback - oh, and just remembered publishing to PDF does not work - it had to be published as PDF Slideshow.
But sadly I can't get modern MP4's to play at all, yet...
No-one has come back on this, so may be it's not possible to embed a video link in PPX9 to playback with all controls in a PDF?
Which is strange if the dialog box is there in PPX9 giving the impression that it should work?
So, I am left wondering if the problem is in PPX9 - or in PDF?
I do a monthly PPX9/PDF newsletter for my club and they have now requested that I have video media clips embedded within the neswletter for our readers to play back in PDF.
I have set it up as the dialog box below. The video plays fine in PDF but does not have any controls - even though I set it up to have controls showing? So, all the reader can do is watch the video in one sitting and can't start>stop>pause, etc. Also there was no floating window when playing back in PDF? I selected: Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)
Appreciate any help please. Thanks Sandy.
